Evolv Technology Raises $30 Million in Growth Capital from Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Others to Accelerate Leadership in Human Security Market

WALTHAM, MA – January 8, 2020 – Evolv Technology today announced several strategic moves to scale its operations to meet the unprecedented demand for its category-redefining free-flow weapons-screening and threat detection systems. Capitalizing on artificial intelligence, machine learning and sensor technology to ensure the safety of millions of people worldwide, the company’s systems are in use at Lincoln Center, Oakland Airport, Gillette Stadium, L.L. Bean, Spartanburg School District Six in South Carolina and hundreds of other iconic customer locations around the world.

Evolv’s Series C funding now exceeds 0 million and includes former Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s firm, Finback Investment Partners. Existing investors Bill Gates, DCVC (Data Collective), General Catalyst Partners, Lux Capital, SineWave Ventures and others also participated. The funds will be used to expand sales, marketing, customer support, channel programs and product development following a year of record growth. Total funding in the company now exceeds 5 million.

“Mass shootings in our country and Florida like the ones that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Pulse nightclub and just last month at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola are happening more frequently around the world,” Bush said. “Evolv has reinvented what’s required in physical security systems to protect innocent people. Outdated, legacy systems just don’t meet the need.”

Evolv has also promoted cybersecurity industry veteran Peter George to chief executive officer (CEO). He joined the company earlier this year as chief commercial officer with a 25-year track record for building disruptive technology startups into market leaders. Earlier in his career, as chairman, president and CEO with cybersecurity pioneer Fidelis Security Systems, George guided the firm through substantial growth that prompted its acquisition by General Dynamics. In addition to cybersecurity, he has led the domestic and international commercialization at multiple software and networking companies as president, board member and investor.

“The active shooter epidemic is one of the greatest challenges facing our generation,” George said. “Evolv is the human security company that delivers the best approach to maintaining society’s freedom of movement while dramatically reducing threats to our schools, places of worship, entertainment venues and other public places. Our systems remove the tradeoff between safety and the inconvenience of an intrusive screening experience. As Evolv’s CEO, I’m honored to have the personal and professional opportunity of a lifetime to make a difference by helping to reduce acts of violence.”

Additionally, under the direction of Evolv Co-founder and prior CEO Mike Ellenbogen, the company is expanding its research, development and productization efforts through which he and his team will continue to drive future generations of free-flow weapons detection and threat mitigation systems. Ellenbogen has more than 20 years of experience in engineering, R&D, business development and marketing in the weapons-screening industry. Prior to Evolv, he founded Reveal Imaging Technologies and served as CEO through rapid growth that led to its acquisition by Science Applications International Corporation. Previously, he held key roles at Vivid Technologies and PerkinElmer Detection Systems.

About Evolv’s AI-based Weapons-Screening and Threat Detection Systems

Second only to the TSA, organizations using Evolv’s systems have screened more than 50 million people – protecting the public by preventing individuals from bringing more than 5,000 weapons into schools, sports stadiums, concert halls, places of work, houses of worship and other public venues. The company’s product suite includes Evolv Express™ and Evolv Edge® systems. Unlike metal detectors and other legacy screening products, Evolv’s systems can identify metal and non-metallic objects and are the world’s fastest, most accurate and least intrusive weapons detection systems.

Powered by the Evolv Cortex AI Software Platform, Evolv’s systems become increasingly more intelligent as new threat profiles are discovered and leverage patented threat classification software paired with a sensor network. This approach instantly distinguishes between actual threats such as firearms, plastic explosives, knives or bombs and everyday items such as cellphones, car keys and wallets. Notably, through its open API, Evolv’s systems can integrate seamlessly into an organization’s security ecosystem.

Evolv’s systems screen hundreds to thousands of people per hour – 10 times the amount of any other screening products. Importantly, the systems provide a user-friendly experience by precluding the need to empty pockets, remove belts, check bags and other cumbersome procedures. Individuals and groups alike simply walk through. If a threat is detected, the Evolv system instantly identifies for security staff the person in question and the exact location where the object is located. This maximizes risk reduction while optimizing security staff resources.

Evolv Technology Expands Leadership Team with Industry Experts from Security, Law Enforcement and Cyber Security

Peter George Named Chief Commercial Officer; Alan S. Cohen Appointed Chairman of Evolv Board of Directors; Jin Kim and Bob Eckel Join Advisory Board as New Members

BOSTON, April 10, 2019 – Evolv Technology today announced the appointment of four key members to leadership positions. The expanded leadership team will enable the company to meet the growing demand for its AI-powered security screening solutions that detect bombs and weapons. Evolv named Peter George chief commercial officer, named Alan S. Cohen as chairman, Evolv board of directors and added Jin Kim and Bob Eckel to the Evolv advisory board.

According to Gun Violence Archive, there were 340 mass shootings in the U.S. alone in 2018. Globally, thousands of civilians have been injured or killed in attacks and bombings on soft targets, such as sporting events, concerts, places of worship, and hotels. Traditional security screening solutions, like the metal detector, rely on technology developed in 1881 and are not designed to detect today’s bombing and gun threats in high-volume venues – impacting customer service and creating bottlenecks that represent targets in themselves.

Evolv is leading the next generation of security and screening by combining advanced sensors with AI to instantly detect weapons, firearms, and explosives. By using advanced sensors and AI/machine learning technology, Evolv enables venues to seamlessly screen employees, visitors, and VIPs by just naturally walking through, without having them empty their pockets or bags. Evolv’s growing list of customers includes Lincoln Center, L.L.Bean, Gillette Stadium, and Oakland Airport.

“The mass shootings and terrorist attacks of the last several years have fundamentally altered how venues like concert halls, hotels, corporations and even places of worship view security. Metal detectors were never designed to discriminate between today’s modern weapons and metallic objects like cell phones that we all carry every day, let alone support large crowd capacity. This growing need is driving tremendous demand for Evolv’s advanced screening solutions,” said Mike Ellenbogen, CEO, and founder of Evolv Technology. “The deep security background brought by Jin and Bob, combined with Peter’s operational experience, and Alan’s proven company building expertise, is exactly the combination Evolv needs to scale operations and meet the tremendous demand we’re seeing for solutions that actually solve the active shooter and terrorist threats in real-world applications.”

“Evolv is actively reducing the active shooter epidemic in our society, having scanned over 10 million people last year,” Chairman of Evolv’s board of directors, Alan S. Cohen, commented. “The company’s unique convergence of AI with physical security makes it possible for security and venue managers to finally implement security screening without sacrificing the user experience. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this mission-driven company.”

EXPANSION OF EVOLV LEADERSHIP TEAM

As chief commercial officer, Peter George is responsible for driving Evolv’s customer-facing operations as the company continues to expand globally. With more than 30 years of experience leading successful cybersecurity companies, Peter plays a key role in helping lead the convergence of physical security with the digital world. Previously, he led two SaaS-based cybersecurity companies from pre-revenue to over $70 million in revenue. Before Evolv, Peter was president and CEO of a security analytics company, Empow Cybersecurity. Prior to that, Peter was president and CEO of Fidelis Cybersecurity, a leader in advanced threat defense, and president and CEO of Crossbeam Systems. He currently serves on the board of directors of cyber security companies, Flashpoint and Corero Network Security (LSE: CNS).

Alan S. Cohen has been appointed chairman of Evolv’s board of directors. Most recently, he was a board member and chief commercial officer at Illumio. A long-time enterprise tech veteran, Alan’s prior two companies, Airespace (acquired by Cisco for $450 million) and Nicira (acquired by VMware for $1.26 billion), were the market leaders in software-driven, cutting-edge technologies. Prior to Airespace, Alan held executive roles at Cisco and IBM. He is well known for his experience in marketing and organizational scaling in several industries including networking, security, SaaS and enterprise software. Alan also serves as an advisor at Cohesity, Mist Systems, and Netskope.

Former FBI special agent, Jin Kim, joins Evolv’s advisory board as a widely regarded subject matter expert and material practitioner in active shooter and workplace violence risk management. He served 23 years in the FBI, working as the active shooter coordinator on the Crisis Management Unit, and the leading authority directing active shooter and workplace violence risk mitigation and training for the FBI’s corporate programming and private sector partnerships. Jin now works as founder and principal of the PerSec Academy Advisory Group LLC, which specializes in active shooter and workplace violence risk management.

Bob Eckel joins Evolv’s advisory board as a secure identity solutions expert. An established executive for building and leading businesses, Bob will apply his deep experience in biometric systems to Evolv’s technology to improve both security and customer operations. Previously, he was regional president for North America Identity and Security at IDEMIA (formerly OT-Morpho), where he oversaw a $700 million business and successfully integrated four North American companies into a premier industry leader. He also held senior executive positions at L-1 Identity Solutions, Digimarc, and Raytheon.

Experts will be on hand to demonstrate the Evolv Edge®, a physical security system that takes the hassle out of people screening by consistently scanning for bombs and weapons without the need to stop or empty pockets. Evolv Technology Launches First Free-Flow Weapons-Detection System Designed to Stop Active Shooters and Other Threats

Express is the fastest weapons-screening system on the market, consistently screening 60 people every minute for firearms and other threats.

WALTHAM, MA, October 22, 2019  – Evolv Technology, the leader in free-flow weapons detection, launched Evolv Express™, the first no-stop weapons-screening system built to automatically screen groups of people as they walk through without slowing or stopping. With hundreds of systems deployed globally that have screened more than 25 million visitors to-date, Evolv continues to deliver innovative threat detection products. Express screens visitors individually or together, while automatically differentiating weapons from personal items.

Express is the fastest weapons-screening system on the market, consistently screening 60 people every minute for firearms and other threats. That’s 3,600 people per hour – 10X faster than a traditional checkpoint system. Express is designed to address the active shooter epidemic by detecting potential shooters before they enter a venue, without slowing the flow of visitors. Applications for Express include addressing workplace gun violence and school shootings, protecting iconic landmarks and keeping sports and entertainment venues safe. Venue managers no longer must choose between effective security and positive visitor experience.

“We live in an era of viral violence which has created a mass vulnerability problem. There is a clear need for a better way to deter or detect firearms and other threats before they enter a safe space, all while maintaining a positive experience for visitors and employees. Since the vast majority of visitors pose no threat, how do you allow them to walk right through while simultaneously identifying and separating those few individuals who may require a closer look?” stated Mike Ellenbogen, Chief Executive Officer, Evolv Technology. “We’re dedicated to solving the protection paradox. Today’s facilities need a solution that can quickly identify a threat but still welcome the crowds. We’re proud to have developed the first weapons-detection system capable of preventing the mass slaughter of innocent people without subjecting visitors to the traditional prison-like security experience.”

Using a new patented method of threat detection, Evolv’s Cortex AI™ software platform can instantly detect and identify a person carrying a weapon without slowing the flow of visitors who are carrying their personal items and bags. By fusing the latest high-speed sensors and Cortex AI, Express is the only weapons-detection system to deliver:

10X Faster Throughput than Traditional Checkpoints: Screening more than 3,600 people per hour. Visitors and employees walk one at a time or in groups through multi-lane entrances up to eight feet wide.

Free-Flow Screening: Only with Evolv, groups of people are screened simultaneously without removing personal items. Visitors no longer must stop and empty their pockets or remove their bags. They simply walk through naturally.

Real-Time Weapons Detection: The Evolv Cortex AI software instantly distinguishes between threats and personal items such as keys, coins, belts, and cell phones on their body or in their bag. Weapons include firearms, explosive devices, and knives.

Targeted Searches: Express provides guards with a real-time image on a local tablet, highlighting the individual with the potential threat and the location on the visitor’s body or in their bag.

Smarter Over Time: Stay ahead of the threat landscape. With the Evolv Cortex AI software platform, Express becomes more intelligent as new threat profiles are discovered.

Evolv is being used by iconic venues worldwide to screen people for threats in a free-flow operation.  Express debuted at the Global Security Exchange (GSX) Conference in September, enabling security teams to experience the system live in action for themselves:

“At Evolv, we have a strong technical substance – unique, different, and impactful to build upon and create a new category of solutions in the physical security space,” said Owais Hassan, VP of Engineering. “I am humbled and excited about the opportunity and look forward to delivering innovative security solutions and helping scale the company to the next growth level.”

HOW EVOLV STOPS ACTIVE SHOOTERS AND BOMBERS AT PUBLIC VENUES AND WORKPLACES: THE EVOLV CORTEX AI SOFTWARE PLATFORM

Unlike legacy checkpoint technologies, Evolv systems are powered by the Evolv Cortex AI Software Platform, which leverages proprietary threat classification software and a sensor network to instantly distinguish between threats such as a gun or bomb and the things we normally carry like a cell phone. Evolv detects a wide range of weapons and non-metallic items of interest without creating congested security lines. With Evolv, no stopping is required, no emptying pockets or removal of bags – people simply walk through the entrance. If a threat is detected, the Evolv free-flow smart threat detection instantly identifies the person, and the location of the threat is shown on a screen to the security team.

Whereas traditional metal detectors can only clear up to 300 people per hour, Evolv systems can clear thousands of people per hour, a 10X improvement in throughput. With 10X higher throughput, Evolv products require fewer security guards, reducing labor costs by up to 70%.

Evolv Launches Global Tour Showcasing The First Free-Flow Smart Threat Detection

BOSTON, August 9, 2019 – Evolv Technology, the leader in free-flow smart threat detection, today announced the first in a series of upcoming “Experience Evolv” live events where security teams and venue operators can experience how Evolv prevents active shooters and bombers from entering public venues and workplaces. The first event was held on August 8 at Rosewood Sand Hill in Menlo Park, CA.

Evolv prevents attackers from bringing weapons into public venues and workplaces with the only free-flow smart threat detection that can screen thousands of people per hour without requiring visitors to stop and empty pockets or remove bags.

“Evolv was founded with a clear mission to keep people safe while providing a positive visitor security experience,” said Peter George, Chief Commercial Officer of Evolv Technology. “In this era of viral violence, it is critical that security professionals have every option at their disposal to protect visitors to their venues. The Experience Evolv Tour will give them a first-hand opportunity to see the latest weapons screening in action and demonstrate how their venues can prioritize the security of their visitors.”

By combining the latest sensors and the Evolv Cortex AI™ Software Platform, Evolv can instantly distinguish between threats such as a gun, versus common items like cell phones, while screening thousands of people per hour. When a threat is detected, Evolv immediately identifies the person and location of the weapon on the person’s body, providing security teams with precision threat prevention while improving clearance throughput by more than 10x.

Attendees of Experience Evolv will be able to discuss innovative security applications, hear customer testimonials and talk to industry leading security experts on risk-based screening and how organizations can prioritize targeting the weapons that present the most danger.

Experience Evolv events are planned for Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle and Southern Florida, as well as Europe and Asia.
