Why We Wear Orange

June marks the 10th annual National Gun Violence Awareness Month to raise awareness and help end gun violence. June 7 kicks off the #WearOrange campaign, a representation of gun violence victims, survivors, and those working together to end gun violence.

Today we think deeply about the victims, their families, their friends, colleagues and communities and the lifelong impact such trauma has for them. We hold their hearts with ours and wish for better.

At Evolv, we are driven by a vision of a world where people can gather without the constant fear of gun violence. We come to work every day with a deep sense of purpose to do our small part in making the world a safer place. One billion people scanned. Over 400,000 weapons detected last year alone from entering prohibited spaces. Countless stories of loaded guns being stopped when they see Evolv.

We may never be able to quantify exactly what has been prevented, but we won’t stop working towards solutions to help put an end to gun violence. We all deserve to live in a world where we feel safe to gather… to live, to learn, to work and to play.

This is why we #wearorange.

10 Considerations for Concealed Weapons Detection Comparison Testing

Choosing to invest in a concealed weapons detection solution is a significant decision for security teams and organizations alike.  The solution must help enhance the security of your venue while aligning with your current operations.

When assessing possible systems, conducting independent testing is critical to understanding detection performance, alert rates, and alert resolution. The following outlines ten key considerations as a foundation for conducting fair and accurate comparative testing between systems.

1. Set Up the System in Your Environment: Ensure there is a consistent lane width distance for reliable detection every time. Avoid anyone adjusting the width during testing and assess ADA-compliance based on the recommended lane width.

2. Factor Outdoor Conditions on Detection and Nuisance Alerts: If using the system outdoors, consider the impact of outdoor conditions on system performance. Verify the system is weather-resistant, stable, and doesn’t require additional weight to prevent tipping. Observe how wind affects detection performance and whether it leads to an increase in nuisance alert rates.

3. Grasp Control of Recommended Security Settings: Comprehend the detection performance at the provider’s recommended security setting for your venue. Guarantee that settings are not adjusted between tests with visual verification. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the methods for adjusting or controlling sensitivity, whether through mobile, desktop, or directly on the system.

4. Test with Real, Commonly Carried Firearms: Perform comprehensive detection tests using authentic, commonly carried firearms. Note that test pieces do not always represent the construction and performance of real threats. It’s important to be aware that imitation firearms can easily be purchased online, used during testing, and these replicas are typically made of zinc and will not reliably trigger alerts.

5. Test Firearms in Multiple Positions on the Body: Thoroughly test a range of authentic firearm models across various positions on the body and orientations, all while maintaining consistent sensitivity settings throughout each test. Evaluate the accuracy and consistency of detection at different points on the body from ankle to head.

6. Understand the Threat Resolution Process: When an individual triggers an alert, understand how the system provides visibility into who and where to search. In the absence of a visual showing an image of the person and the targeted threat location, understand the alternative of less effective hand-wanding and error-prone manual pat downs.

7. Comprehend Available Analytics and Security System Integrations: Assess the availability of key data such as visitor arrival curves, alert statistics, detected weapons, and more to enhance operational efficiency. Inquire about regular automated push reports for insights directly to your inbox.

8. Explore Support of Concept of Operations (ConOps): Understand the vendor’s role throughout implementation and go-live in designing operational plans, conducting guard training, offering on-site support, and providing communications for your staff.

9. Verify Compliance, Testing, and Standards: Ensure the system adheres to OSHA’s National Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) production compliance requirement for electronic devices deployed in buildings, has undergone third-party testing (e.g., Metrix NDT Ltd. Etc.), qualifies as an anti-terrorism technology under the DHS SAFETY Act, and verify the highest NILECJ standards met.

10. Assess Accuracy and Consistency: Utilize the above parameters for testing, ensuring an apples-to-apples comparison across systems in terms of 1) detection performance, 2) alert rates, and 3) alert resolution, while also considering the impact on the visitor experience.

Evolv is committed to supporting you throughout the process and beyond. Our team is available to conduct on-site testing, offer additional testing guideline materials, and guide you through the decision-making process.

The First College to Deploy Evolv, Cape Fear Community College Renews Evolv Relationship for Improved Efficiency and Guest Experience

Cape Fear Community College was a first adopter back in June 2019 of the predecessor of the Evolv Express®, known as Evolv Edge®. Fast forward to 2021 with the launch of the Evolv Express, CFCC was immediately interested in the upgrade.

Norm Berth, Guest Experience Specialist at CFCC says “…due to the relationship we have with Evolv and the success we had as an early adopter of the technology, we didn’t look at alternatives to the Express,” he says. “The relationship has also evolved over time, and Evolv has added operational infrastructure and processes to ensure we get the support we need. By upgrading and installing the Evolv Express systems, Cape Fear Community College was able to achieve the following:

  • Cut average time for secondary security checks to 10 to 15 seconds— a 200% reduction
  • Identified and tagged 47 firearms since deploying the Express system in 2023
  • Increased time in concessions—and revenue from sales—before the start of shows

Evolv Technology Partners with T-Mobile Arena and MGM Grand Garden Arena

WALTHAM, Mass. (May 29, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based screening to create safer experiences, today announced its partnership with T-Mobile Arena and MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.  The two arenas are the destination’s leaders, hosting some of the most popular sports and entertainment events annually.

Evolv was installed in both arenas in January, with five Evolv Express® systems located at each venue. Evolv Express uses advanced sensor technology and AI to tell the difference between certain potential threats and many commonly carried objects. Evolv Express helps enable a quick and unobtrusive ingress, allowing visitors to move through venue entrances at a brisk pace without having to always empty their pockets or be subject to bag checks.

T-Mobile Arena is home to the 2023 Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights. The decision was made to switch to Evolv Express at T-Mobile Arena after seeing its success at ticketed venues across the world, including other arenas hosting professional sports. Earlier this year, it was announced that TD Garden, home of the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins, partnered with Evolv. In early March, Sports Business Journal declared Express the winner in the “Best In Sports Technology” and “Best In Fan Experience Technology” categories at its Tech awards.

“Las Vegas is the sports and entertainment capital of the world and the magic of the city is inside its venues, not standing in line waiting to gain entry,” said Jay Muelhoefer, chief commercial officer for Evolv Technology. “Evolv is excited to partner with T-Mobile Arena and MGM Grand Garden Arena to help make guest experiences in Las Vegas safer and even more memorable.”

In addition to sports and performing arts venues, Evolv’s technology helps secure leading theme parks, casinos, schools, hospitals and places of worship and has screened over one billions visitors to date.

Lee Health Selects Evolv Technology For Weapons Detection

The health system is the first in southwest Florida to use the AI-based screening systems

WALTHAM, Mass. – (May 22, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based screening to create safer experiences, today announced its partnership with Lee Health, one of the largest not-for-profit health systems in Florida. Lee Health uses Evolv’s state-of-the-art Evolv Express® screening solution at the entrances to three of its emergency departments, with plans to install Evolv Express systems at three additional locations.

Evolv Express uses powerful sensor technology with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide safer, more accurate threat detection at exceptional volume and speed. With the recent Evolv Express 7.0 software update, users experience enhancements to the detection algorithm designed to reduce false alarms and a more intuitive interface. The system allows people to walk through without having to always stop to open bags or empty pockets. The technology can tell the difference between certain threats and many everyday metal items people carry with them, allowing for a smoother entry at a place like a hospital’s emergency department, where speed is critical.

Lee Health has installed Evolv Express at the emergency department entrances to Lee Health Memorial Hospital, Lee Health Gulf Coast Medical Center, and Lee Health Cape Coral Hospital. It plans to install three more systems at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and Health Park Medical Center. With an increase in violence towards staff at hospitals around the country, as well as multiple incidents of gun violence at hospitals in the U.S. in the first half of 2023, Lee Health joins other health facilities turning to Evolv to add to their layered security approach.

“We are acutely aware of escalating violence in healthcare settings, and unfortunately, we have had our own instances where weapons have made it inside our buildings,” said Robert Sherwood, Lee Health’s director of public safety technology and community-based care. “In the short time we’ve been using Evolv Express, we’ve already seen success. The systems have identified firearms and knives that otherwise would have been brought inside our hospitals.”

Evolv has partnered with more than 350 hospital buildings across the country, screening more than 600,000 hospital visitors every day.

“Hospitals and other healthcare facilities are places of healing, and no one in those buildings should feel threatened in any way,” said Jason Grellner, vice president of healthcare for Evolv Technology. “Evolv is proud to be a part of the security posture at Lee Health, helping to contribute to a feeling of safety for patients, staff, and visitors.”

Virtua Health Adds Evolv Technology As Its Weapons Detection Partner

South New Jersey’s Largest Healthcare Provider Incorporates AI Tech as Part of Multifaceted Campaign Against Gun Violence

WALTHAM, Mass. – (May 21, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based screening to create safer experiences, today announced its partnership with Virtua Health, a not-for-profit health system in New Jersey.

Virtua Health will use 14 Evolv Express® systems at five of its hospitals and two of its health-and-wellness campuses. So far, the weapons detection technology has been installed at five facilities. Evolv Express uses sensor technology combined with AI to tell the difference between many everyday metal items people carry in their pockets and certain objects that pose a threat.

In a hospital, Evolv’s presence can alert visitors, patients and staff that the hospital is committed to safety, which is particularly important given the prevalence of violence in healthcare settings. Healthcare workers are five times as likely to suffer a workplace violence injury when compared to other professionals.

Evolv Express has proven its immediate positive impact for Evolv’s healthcare customers. Windsor Regional Hospital in Windsor, Ontario, just across the border from Detroit, reported that Evolv detected more than 2,000 weapons at the emergency department in less than six months. After installing Evolv Express in its lobby last October, The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania reported that the system prevented more than 300 weapons from entering the facility in its first three months in use.

Virtua Health learned about Evolv from the Philadelphia Phillies, one of a number of professional baseball teams that partner with Evolv for weapons detection at ballpark entrances.

“Actions speak louder than words and partnering with Evolv demonstrates to our staff, patients and community that violence prevention is one of our top priorities because the safety of those inside our hospitals is paramount,” said Gregory Pease, assistant vice president of security and outpatient services for Virtua Health. “As a former police officer, I’ve seen a number of violence mitigation strategies, and I trust Evolv. The results speak for themselves.”

Virtua Health is at the forefront of gun violence prevention in southern New Jersey. The health system co-sponsored a statewide gun buyback initiative a few years ago, and works with the community to support gun safety education. In Evolv’s second annual Gun Violence in America survey, 36% of Americans said they believe they or someone they love are extremely/likely to encounter an active shooter in their lifetime.

“People have enough on their minds when they’re in a hospital, and whether or not they are safe in that environment should not be a concern,” said Jay Muelhoefer, chief commercial officer for Evolv Technology. “Evolv is proud to partner with Virtua Health to elevate safety and allow the focus in that setting to be on improved health outcomes.”

Evolv’s more than 4,500 systems deployed worldwide help secure leading theme parks, performing arts centers, casinos, places of worship, sports venues and schools, in addition to hospitals.

eBook: The Impact of Invasive Security Screening for K-12 Students

Finding the Right Balance Between School Safety and a Positive Student Experience

In recent years, K-12 schools all over the country have been ramping up security measures to create safer campuses for their students — largely in response to school shootings that have been gripping national headlines. Traditional metal detectors and more portable metal detectors are among the various types of solutions that schools have been adding to their physical security efforts, as part of their layered security approach.

While traditional screening methods can help in stopping weapons from entering campus and deterring potentially dangerous incidents, schools have cited that these methods can be problematic.

In this eBook, we explore four ways that invasive security screening negatively impacts students followed by how schools can avoid these harmful effects with a more guided weapons detection solution that allows for directed and unbiased searches.

Using Grant Funding to Create Safer Experiences for Houses of Worship

The current political and social climate in the US and abroad has played a role in creating an environment that may put Houses of Worship and religious institutions at risk for potential violence.

According to the FBI*, religious hate crimes have been on the rise and reported antisemitic hate crimes in the U.S. rose by more than 38 percent in 2022. These threats have manifested themselves in horrible tragedies such as the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in 2018, the First Baptist Church Shooting in 2017, and the Al Noor Mosque Shooting in 2019.

There are a number of solutions for faith leaders and their security professionals to help keep their congregation safe while maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The Federal Government has acknowledged the risk to Houses of Worship and other soft targets and allocates funds through the Nonprofit Security Grant Program to help offset the cost to these groups and institutions looking to improve their security.

eBook: The Impact of Invasive Security Screening in Healthcare Settings

Finding a Better Screening Solution

There is no doubt that there is a great need for hospitals and other healthcare facilities to prioritize the safety of their patients, guests, and staff members. Patients may already be in a vulnerable state, and it is a duty of the healthcare organization to keep these individuals safe on the premises while they receive care.

In this eBook, we explore three ways that intrusive secondary security screenings negatively impact healthcare site patrons and staff members followed by how healthcare organizations can avoid these harmful effects with a more guided weapons detection solution that helps allow for directed and unbiased searches.

Evolv Technology Teams up With Pittsburgh Pirates to Support Community Groups Providing Education and Mentoring Experiences for Local Youth

Company and team provide high-profile First Pitch experiences at Pirates home games to help raise awareness of three youth-focused non-profits active in the region.

WALTHAM, Mass. (May 8, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based weapons detection to create safer experiences, today shared details about its season-long community relations program with the Pittsburgh Pirates. This program is an element of Evolv’s broader partnership with the ballclub, through which the company is designated as the team’s Official Screening Partner.  Evolv is a trusted security partner to a number organizations in the Pittsburgh community, including the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Acrisure Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and PNC Park

One joint initiative of the Evolv and Pirates community effort focuses on the team’s First Pitch experience, in which a representative of a Pittsburgh-area community organization has the honor of throwing out the first pitch before the start of a Pirates home game. For 2024, Evolv has enabled three such organizations to have this unique experience and opportunity for enhanced visibility:

  • The Pittsburgh Promise, located in downtown Pittsburgh, fosters educational achievement among urban youth and funds scholarships for post-secondary schooling.  The organization, founded by local sports legend Franco Harris, shares Evolv’s belief that physical safety at school improves the quality of the learning environment.
  • A Kid Again, a national organization with a local chapter in Pittsburgh, offers free events and activities to families with a child who faces a life-threatening condition. Many of the recipients have long hospital stays and are likely impacted by hospital security needs and procedures.
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, based in the city’s East Liberty neighborhood, is the region’s leading youth mentoring organization, matching children who seek a mentor with caring adults.  (Upcoming First Pitch dates: August 3, 2024; and September 7, 2024)

“We are thrilled to share the benefits of our Pirates partnership with such worthy organizations,” said John Baier, Evolv’s vice president of sports. “Our commitment to the communities we serve extends beyond security and we are honored to help raise visibility for these organizations doing important work to support children, their families, and the Pittsburgh community at large. Seeing these real-world beneficiaries motivates all Evolvers to continue to execute on the company’s mission of making the world a safer place for people to gather.”

In addition to this initiative, each season Evolv donates dozens of Pirates game tickets to community organizations, schools, and hospitals throughout the Pittsburgh area to provide opportunities for fun and memorable community experiences.

Beyond the Pirates, Evolv has official partnerships with 40 other sports teams across the American professional leagues and collegiate conferences.  In addition to sports venues, Evolv’s technology helps secure leading theme parks, performing arts centers, casinos, places of worship and hundreds of schools and hospitals across the U.S. and has screened 1 billion people since 2019.
