Evolv Technology’s Free-Flow Weapons Detection System Wins Multiple Secure Campus 2020 Awards

Honored for Outstanding Campus Security Services and Products, Evolv Express® Recognized as Top Solution in Perimeter Protection and Screening Equipment Categories

WALTHAM, MA – March 5, 2020 – Evolv Technology, the leader in free-flow weapons detection, today announced that it was recognized by Campus Security & Life Safety magazine’s third annual Secure Campus 2020 Awards – winning both the Perimeter Protection and Screening Equipment categories. An independent panel of judges spanning the security industry selected winners using criteria including features, innovation, user friendliness, interoperability, quality, design, market opportunity, technical advances, scalability and impact in the security industry. The companies recognized will be honored at ISC West on March 18 in Las Vegas.

Evolv is committed to making the world a safer place to live, work, learn, and play by helping to protect innocent people from mass shootings, terrorist attacks and similar violent acts. In fall 2019, Evolv Express®, the nation’s first free-flow weapons-detection screening system, was introduced in schools to stop guns, bombs and other weapons from entering school campuses. Some of the nation’s largest school districts such as South Carolina’s Spartanburg County District 6 and Florence 1 Schools use Evolv to keep students safe in an age of increasing viral violence.

“Helping schools and other organizations stay safe is at the core of our mission, so we’re incredibly excited to earn Secure Campus 2020 Awards in both the perimeter protection and screening equipment categories,” said Chief Executive Officer Peter George at Evolv. “Schools today must provide the best educational experience for students while keeping them safe from harm. We’re truly honored to help them protect their most valuable assets—students, teachers, administrators and parents.”

Evolv has redefined weapons-screening and threat detection. Led by a team with proven track records for providing first-to-market products by pairing security expertise with advanced technologies, Evolv’s patented systems combine AI and sensors to differentiate and identify threats from personal items. Doing so allows students to quickly pass through screening (view video) individually or in groups – with backpacks on shoulders, smart phones and keys in pockets and carrying musical instrument cases or other items. Because the system is trained to differentiate weapons from personal items and provides image-aided alarms for targeted secondary screening, the need to search every bag no longer exists.

“The staff at Campus Security & Life Safety magazine has made a commitment to providing information to make campuses safer and more secure. Our commitment is to ensure that manufacturers have an avenue to show off their latest technology, as they provide security solutions to campuses of all kinds, but particularly the K-12 and higher education campus,” said Ralph C. Jensen, editor-in-chief of Campus Security & Life Safety magazine. “The protection of children and young adults in the school setting is extremely important to us as we navigate the education vertical. We applaud security products manufacturers for sharing with us and our readers the best of the best technology.”

Visit us at ISC West from March 17-20, 2020; We’ll be in our partner’s booth #20005, Johnson Controls.

South Carolina School Districts Championing Efforts to Keep Students Safe with Evolv Technology’s First-of-its-Kind Free-Flow Weapons-Detection Systems

Led by Visionaries, Spartanburg County District 6 and Florence 1 Schools Take Proactive Steps to Boost Security Without Disrupting Students, Faculty or Administrators

WALTHAM, MA – February 13, 2020 – Evolv Technology, the leader in human security, today announced that South Carolina school districts Spartanburg County District 6 and Florence 1 Schools have installed Evolv’s AI-based, free-flow weapons-detection systems to keep students safe in an age of increasing viral violence. On the heels of successful initial implementation in recent months, paired with positive feedback from students, teachers, parents and administrators, Spartanburg School District 6 has increased the number of Evolv systems now in use throughout their campuses.

South Carolina has 85 school districts. Spartanburg School District 6 – the state’s 20th largest with approximately 11,500 students and 900 certified staff members – is one of seven districts within Spartanburg County and includes three middle schools, a ninth-grade school campus and a high school. The 11th largest in the state with more than 16,000 students, Florence 1 includes three middle schools and three high schools and is the second largest employer in Florence County.

Taking proactive measures to keep students safe was paramount for both school districts, especially given the increasing frequency of school shootings and related incidents. The districts required a technology solution that would help prevent threats from entering their campuses—such as guns, large knives or explosives. Equally important was maintaining a welcoming environment paired with the ability for students to move quickly through screening in order to ensure they got to class on time and no lines were created. Evolv’s technology eliminates the need to choose between safety and experience reducing the burden on security teams and taking the hassle out of people-screening.

“District 6 is a forward-thinking, progressive school that has long been focused on education and innovation and we always put our children first,” said Dr. Mark Smith, Director of Student Services and Safety at Spartanburg 6—the first school in the nation to use Evolv’s AI-based free-flow weapons detection system. “We wanted to incorporate security technology not because we had any incidents, but because we wanted to ensure we never have one. I’d been researching security strategies and next generation technologies searching for a solution that delivered optimal security while providing a welcoming, non-prison-like environment for everyone on campus. I’d been coming up short until I discovered Evolv. They checked all the boxes. Based on the outright success of our initial implementation, and outstanding partnership with Evolv, we’ve expanded the number of systems throughout all of our high schools and middle schools.”

“Prior to using Evolv, we used metal detectors,” said Douglas Nunnally, Director of Security and School Safety, Florence 1. “They were highly inefficient because they created lines, prompted an overwhelming number of manual and secondary searches and there was no way to capture any screening data.

“We want students in class learning, not waiting in lines. We needed a system that would speed up the screening process without decreasing security and with Evolv, the process is better, faster and smoother. Notably, it gives us full visibility into screening numbers via the system’s dashboard, while providing us the ability to connect to a security operations center when we’re ready. Evolv offers a true partnership. They don’t just drop off the systems like other vendors—they’ve partnered with us from the start to support and train our staff, and ensure a great experience for our students, faculty, administrators and visitors.”

While metal detectors are good at finding metal, they do not work well in modern environments as most people carry metal such as smart phones. Moreover, metal detectors prompt the need for an extremely high number of additional screening measures such as X-rays and hand searching, inconvenient for those being screened while adding time, creating lines and increasing cost. Up until now, this forced schools to choose between student safety and student experience.

Driven by a mission to keep people safe as they go about their daily lives, Evolv has redefined weapons-screening and threat detection. Led by a team with proven track records for providing first-to-market products by pairing security expertise with advanced technologies, Evolv’s patented systems combine AI and sensors to differentiate and identify threats from personal items. Doing so allows students to quickly pass through screening individually or in groups – with backpacks on shoulders, phones and keys in pockets and carrying musical instrument cases or other items. Because the system is trained to differentiate weapons from personal items and provides image-aided alarms for targeted secondary screening, the need to search every bag no longer exists.

“As a father, I know all too well that schools today not only need to provide the best educational experience for students, teachers and staff, but that they must also help keep them safe from harm,” said Evolv Chief Executive Officer Peter George. “In the first 46 weeks of 2019, there were 45 school shootings. We simply cannot accept that to be the ‘new normal’. Spartanburg 6 and Florence 1 are taking demonstrable action in that regard and they’re paving the way for other school districts when it comes to protecting their schools. We’re honored to be a part of that journey.”

To ensure a successful implementation at schools, Evolv developed a proprietary implementation methodology in a “Playbook” that is provided to school customers during the deployment planning process providing best-practice insights into security system design, concept of operations, user support services, and staff training.

Evolv Technology Raises $30 Million in Growth Capital from Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Others to Accelerate Leadership in Human Security Market

WALTHAM, MA – January 8, 2020 – Evolv Technology today announced several strategic moves to scale its operations to meet the unprecedented demand for its category-redefining free-flow weapons-screening and threat detection systems. Capitalizing on artificial intelligence, machine learning and sensor technology to ensure the safety of millions of people worldwide, the company’s systems are in use at Lincoln Center, Oakland Airport, Gillette Stadium, L.L. Bean, Spartanburg School District Six in South Carolina and hundreds of other iconic customer locations around the world.

Evolv’s Series C funding now exceeds 0 million and includes former Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s firm, Finback Investment Partners. Existing investors Bill Gates, DCVC (Data Collective), General Catalyst Partners, Lux Capital, SineWave Ventures and others also participated. The funds will be used to expand sales, marketing, customer support, channel programs and product development following a year of record growth. Total funding in the company now exceeds 5 million.

“Mass shootings in our country and Florida like the ones that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the Pulse nightclub and just last month at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola are happening more frequently around the world,” Bush said. “Evolv has reinvented what’s required in physical security systems to protect innocent people. Outdated, legacy systems just don’t meet the need.”

Evolv has also promoted cybersecurity industry veteran Peter George to chief executive officer (CEO). He joined the company earlier this year as chief commercial officer with a 25-year track record for building disruptive technology startups into market leaders. Earlier in his career, as chairman, president and CEO with cybersecurity pioneer Fidelis Security Systems, George guided the firm through substantial growth that prompted its acquisition by General Dynamics. In addition to cybersecurity, he has led the domestic and international commercialization at multiple software and networking companies as president, board member and investor.

“The active shooter epidemic is one of the greatest challenges facing our generation,” George said. “Evolv is the human security company that delivers the best approach to maintaining society’s freedom of movement while dramatically reducing threats to our schools, places of worship, entertainment venues and other public places. Our systems remove the tradeoff between safety and the inconvenience of an intrusive screening experience. As Evolv’s CEO, I’m honored to have the personal and professional opportunity of a lifetime to make a difference by helping to reduce acts of violence.”

Additionally, under the direction of Evolv Co-founder and prior CEO Mike Ellenbogen, the company is expanding its research, development and productization efforts through which he and his team will continue to drive future generations of free-flow weapons detection and threat mitigation systems. Ellenbogen has more than 20 years of experience in engineering, R&D, business development and marketing in the weapons-screening industry. Prior to Evolv, he founded Reveal Imaging Technologies and served as CEO through rapid growth that led to its acquisition by Science Applications International Corporation. Previously, he held key roles at Vivid Technologies and PerkinElmer Detection Systems.

About Evolv’s AI-based Weapons-Screening and Threat Detection Systems

Second only to the TSA, organizations using Evolv’s systems have screened more than 50 million people – protecting the public by preventing individuals from bringing more than 5,000 weapons into schools, sports stadiums, concert halls, places of work, houses of worship and other public venues. The company’s product suite includes Evolv Express™ and Evolv Edge® systems. Unlike metal detectors and other legacy screening products, Evolv’s systems can identify metal and non-metallic objects and are the world’s fastest, most accurate and least intrusive weapons detection systems.

Powered by the Evolv Cortex AI Software Platform, Evolv’s systems become increasingly more intelligent as new threat profiles are discovered and leverage patented threat classification software paired with a sensor network. This approach instantly distinguishes between actual threats such as firearms, plastic explosives, knives or bombs and everyday items such as cellphones, car keys and wallets. Notably, through its open API, Evolv’s systems can integrate seamlessly into an organization’s security ecosystem.

Evolv’s systems screen hundreds to thousands of people per hour – 10 times the amount of any other screening products. Importantly, the systems provide a user-friendly experience by precluding the need to empty pockets, remove belts, check bags and other cumbersome procedures. Individuals and groups alike simply walk through. If a threat is detected, the Evolv system instantly identifies for security staff the person in question and the exact location where the object is located. This maximizes risk reduction while optimizing security staff resources.

Evolv Express® vs. the Traditional Walk-Through Metal Detector

In today’s world of everywhere violence, we should no longer be screening with yesterday’s technology. Manual inspections, hand wands and traditional metal detectors are slow, invasive, inefficient, involve too many nuisance alarms and create long lines, forcing venues to choose between safety and the visitor experience.

Did you know, some venues are actually opting not to implement any security at all because they’d rather not make the trade-off between safety and visitor experience?  This can’t be the choice you make.

Deploying screening technology in your venue is no longer something you and your team should dread or delay. With Evolv Express®, the first-of-its-kind free-flow weapons-detection system, visitors and employees walk through while simultaneously being screened for potential threats.

Through the power of AI, Express instantly differentiates threats from personal items such as keys, coins, belts and cell phones, making it easy for guards and frictionless for visitors. In fact, visitors no longer need to stop, empty pockets or remove bags.  They simply walk right through at a natural pace one-at-a-time or in groups.  It’s the fastest weapons-screening product on the market, screening 60 people every minute, 10X faster than traditional walk-through metal detectors.

This two-lane system is approximately 11 feet wide and requires far fewer guards than traditional metal detectors to manage. In fact, some venues are seeing a 70% reduction in labor costs

For those of you accustomed to traditional metal detectors, it’s going to be a positive shock…

  • You no longer need a large footprint for security equipment
  • Long, frustrating security screening lines will no longer form outside your venue
  • Guards will now be able to conduct targeted searches using image-aided alarms
  • And, your labor costs will decrease by up to 70%

Finally, venues can stop threats, while assuring a welcoming visitor and employee experience.

If at 800 people per hour, you need 50% less screening equipment, and 60% fewer guards, imagine what your ConOp would look like as your visitor throughput needs increase.

Download our full infographic to see what screening 1200, 1600, 2400 and 3600 people per hour would look like with Evolv Express versus traditional metal detectors.

BOSTON, April 10, 2019 – Evolv Technology today announced the appointment of four key members to leadership positions. The expanded leadership team will enable the company to meet the growing demand for its AI-powered security screening solutions that detect bombs and weapons. Evolv named Peter George chief commercial officer, named Alan S. Cohen as chairman, Evolv board of directors and added Jin Kim and Bob Eckel to the Evolv advisory board.

According to Gun Violence Archive, there were 340 mass shootings in the U.S. alone in 2018. Globally, thousands of civilians have been injured or killed in attacks and bombings on soft targets, such as sporting events, concerts, places of worship, and hotels. Traditional security screening solutions, like the metal detector, rely on technology developed in 1881 and are not designed to detect today’s bombing and gun threats in high-volume venues – impacting customer service and creating bottlenecks that represent targets in themselves.

Evolv is leading the next generation of security and screening by combining advanced sensors with AI to instantly detect weapons, firearms, and explosives. By using advanced sensors and AI/machine learning technology, Evolv enables venues to seamlessly screen employees, visitors, and VIPs by just naturally walking through, without having them empty their pockets or bags. Evolv’s growing list of customers includes Lincoln Center, L.L.Bean, Gillette Stadium, and Oakland Airport.

“The mass shootings and terrorist attacks of the last several years have fundamentally altered how venues like concert halls, hotels, corporations and even places of worship view security. Metal detectors were never designed to discriminate between today’s modern weapons and metallic objects like cell phones that we all carry every day, let alone support large crowd capacity. This growing need is driving tremendous demand for Evolv’s advanced screening solutions,” said Mike Ellenbogen, CEO, and founder of Evolv Technology. “The deep security background brought by Jin and Bob, combined with Peter’s operational experience, and Alan’s proven company building expertise, is exactly the combination Evolv needs to scale operations and meet the tremendous demand we’re seeing for solutions that actually solve the active shooter and terrorist threats in real-world applications.”

“Evolv is actively reducing the active shooter epidemic in our society, having scanned over 10 million people last year,” Chairman of Evolv’s board of directors, Alan S. Cohen, commented. “The company’s unique convergence of AI with physical security makes it possible for security and venue managers to finally implement security screening without sacrificing the user experience. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this mission-driven company.”

EXPANSION OF EVOLV LEADERSHIP TEAM

As chief commercial officer, Peter George is responsible for driving Evolv’s customer-facing operations as the company continues to expand globally. With more than 30 years of experience leading successful cybersecurity companies, Peter plays a key role in helping lead the convergence of physical security with the digital world. Previously, he led two SaaS-based cybersecurity companies from pre-revenue to over $70 million in revenue. Before Evolv, Peter was president and CEO of a security analytics company, Empow Cybersecurity. Prior to that, Peter was president and CEO of Fidelis Cybersecurity, a leader in advanced threat defense, and president and CEO of Crossbeam Systems. He currently serves on the board of directors of cyber security companies, Flashpoint and Corero Network Security (LSE: CNS).

Alan S. Cohen has been appointed chairman of Evolv’s board of directors. Most recently, he was a board member and chief commercial officer at Illumio. A long-time enterprise tech veteran, Alan’s prior two companies, Airespace (acquired by Cisco for $450 million) and Nicira (acquired by VMware for $1.26 billion), were the market leaders in software-driven, cutting-edge technologies. Prior to Airespace, Alan held executive roles at Cisco and IBM. He is well known for his experience in marketing and organizational scaling in several industries including networking, security, SaaS and enterprise software. Alan also serves as an advisor at Cohesity, Mist Systems, and Netskope.

Former FBI special agent, Jin Kim, joins Evolv’s advisory board as a widely regarded subject matter expert and material practitioner in active shooter and workplace violence risk management. He served 23 years in the FBI, working as the active shooter coordinator on the Crisis Management Unit, and the leading authority directing active shooter and workplace violence risk mitigation and training for the FBI’s corporate programming and private sector partnerships. Jin now works as founder and principal of the PerSec Academy Advisory Group LLC, which specializes in active shooter and workplace violence risk management.

Bob Eckel joins Evolv’s advisory board as a secure identity solutions expert. An established executive for building and leading businesses, Bob will apply his deep experience in biometric systems to Evolv’s technology to improve both security and customer operations. Previously, he was regional president for North America Identity and Security at IDEMIA (formerly OT-Morpho), where he oversaw a $700 million business and successfully integrated four North American companies into a premier industry leader. He also held senior executive positions at L-1 Identity Solutions, Digimarc, and Raytheon.
