Open Letter to Security Professionals

We have served this country in national security, law enforcement and military organizations. Each of us has decades of experience keeping our Homeland safe, here and abroad. Our experience spans the use of technology, intelligence, people, and assets to keep our country safe.

We have a combined 150 years’ experience, having served in leadership positions in the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Defense, New York Police Department, Office of National Intelligence, Transportation Security Administration, and United States Secret Service.

Today, we serve as advisors to Evolv Technology. We have known this company for years; many of us have worked with Evolv for nearly a decade. Our work has included reviewing the current business and products of Evolv, discussions with customers on their use of the technology, and discussing new product concepts. We know the company well, we know the people who run it, and regularly meet with Evolv and their customers.

We believe that Evolv and its management are dedicated to their mission to Make the World a Safer Place. They are committed to understanding the best use of their products, making improvements to the technology over time, and finding ways they can help their customers achieve their security objectives.

We have seen a wide variety of security technologies over our careers. The Evolv Express system provides an innovative approach to screening people, differentiating weapons from personal items as people walk through without always having to stop. We have seen the Evolv Express’ capabilities improve over time through both technological improvements and a deeper understanding of operational environments. Evolv combines the knowledge of security experts, experience operating thousands of systems screening millions of people, best in class engineers, committed workforce, continuous understanding of customers’ needs, and awareness of current threats to improve the technology and provide guidance on how it can best be used. The company cares deeply about ensuring customers and security professionals fully understand the system and they operate with high integrity in discussions about their technology and its capabilities.

Finally, we strongly believe that a security plan should include multiple layers to address different threat vectors and provide redundancy. These layers include people, process and technology working together. There is no single layer of security that will provide 100% security, that is why there are multiple layers which have proven to be the most successful in mitigating the highest degree of risk. Evolv’s solutions can be an important security technology to help detect and prevent threats from entering prohibited areas.

Sincerely,

-Dan Coats, former Director of National Intelligence; Senator and Ambassador

-David Cohen, former Deputy Director of Operations, Central Intelligence Agency; Deputy Commissioner, New York Police Department

-Juliette Kayyem, former Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Homeland Security

-Jin Kim, former Active Shooter Coordinator on the Crisis Management Unit, Federal Bureau of Investigation

-John Pistole, former Administrator, Transportation Security Administration; former Deputy Director for Counter Terrorism, Federal Bureau of Investigation; former Deputy Director for the FBI

Evolv in Action

Congratulations to the Kansas City Chiefs for their thrilling overtime victory in Super Bowl LVIII.

The NFL season may now be officially over, but the business of sports has no season.  Believe it or not, all NFL teams – including the Chiefs and 49ers – are already busy planning for 2024.  This isn’t just an NFL phenomenon either.  Business staff in every sport must be able to focus simultaneously on delivering in the present and getting ready for the future.

To multi-task like this, efficiency is key.  The most successful team and venue executives have developed strategies to gather and process information quickly and drive toward decisions.

Here at Evolv, we’re doing our part to help these executives get the information they need to make good decisions about venue security screening.  We believe that information should ideally include an IRL (in real life) opportunity to see Evolv Express in action.  Especially for experienced operators who have struggled to reduce entry lines, there’s just no substitute for seeing firsthand a system that can safely and effectively screen as many as 4,000 people per hour.  We use the word “transform” a lot for a reason.  Seeing Express in action truly transforms the understanding of what’s possible.

To make the IRL experience as easy as possible, we’re organizing a major live demo initiative this spring … the Evolv in Action Tour.  We’ve locked in dates for showcase events at 16 sports customer sites from coast to coast, from Citi Field in New York to SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.  Each event will have a full Express demonstration.  As extra incentive, each participant will also be our guest in a suite for a game or for a behind-the-scenes venue tour.

I work in our sports vertical, so that’s naturally the focus of my blogs – but Evolv is much broader, with hundreds of customers in education, healthcare, and other sectors.  The Evolv in Action Tour is open to all.  We just use sports venues for these demos because they have very demanding performance requirements and rigorous vetting processes, which means if they trust Evolv others can confidently do so too.  And because they’re fun!

The full schedule and additional registration information for Evolv in Action can be found here.  Whether cramming future planning into a so-called “off-season” or not, I’m confident that joining us at one of these tour stops would be time very well spent.  Hope to see you there!

A decade later, we are honored to work with more than 600 customers around the world to make that vision a reality; and it is especially meaningful to help protect our hometown. We are Boston Strong.”

Partnership with World’s Leading Venue Management Company Brings Preeminent Fan Experience to the Masses

WALTHAM, Mass. – (February 1, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based screening to create safer experiences, today announced it has been selected as ASM Global’s preferred technology provider for patron screening in North America. Headquartered in Los Angeles, ASM Global’s elite venue network spans five continents with a portfolio of more than 350 of the world’s most prestigious arenas, stadiums, convention and exhibition centers, and performing arts venues. The partnership represents Evolv’s continued leadership in delivering advanced screening for professional sports and entertainment fans and ASM Global’s commitment to creating the best guest experience at its venues around the globe.

Evolv’s flagship product, the state-of-the-art Evolv Express® detection system, is currently screening guests at 10 ASM Global venues across North America including EverBank Stadium and VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida, NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado, Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center in Long Beach, California and Toyota Arena in Ontario, California, since initially being deployed at multiple ASM Global venues in the United Kingdom beginning in 2022.

Providing best-in-class venue operation and content and event booking, ASM Global operates venues that serve live events for more than 164 million guests annually. As part of the partnership, ASM Global will look to usher in a new era of guest experience, ingress and a layered security approach utilizing Evolv’s state-of-the-art Evolv Express® detection system within its portfolio. Together, Evolv and ASM Global are improving the guest ingress process, with early results in North America yielding an 11% increase in arrival efficiency and 13-point increase in NPS score for venues integrating Evolv Express vs. existing averages.

“This partnership brings together two companies at the top of their respective industries, both dedicated to delivering a superior experience to as many guests and fans as possible,” said Ron Bension, CEO ASM Global. “It’s imperative that our partners share our guest-first mindset, and Evolv has proven its ability to enhance fan safety while making venue entry faster, less intrusive, and more dignified.”

Often replacing metal detectors, Express expedites venue entry as guests can walk through without always breaking pace. Sensor technology combined with AI enables the system to differentiate between threats and the everyday kinds of metal people carry.

“ASM Global has been a terrific partner, and we’re elated by the evolution of our relationship and the tremendous positive impact it has had – and will have – on fan safety and experience around the world,” said Peter George, CEO, Evolv Technology. “In 2023, we surpassed 1 billion people scanned, and we anticipate that number to grow exponentially as ASM Global continues to strengthen its customer roster and dominate the category.”

Evolv closed out 2023 with more than 600 customers worldwide and averaging 2.3 million people scanned each day.

Partnership with Evolv Technology a Slam Dunk for Houston’s Toyota Center

Third Houston Pro Sports Team Using Evolv for Weapons Detection

WALTHAM, Mass. – (January 24, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the modern security technology company transforming threat and weapons detection to create safer experiences, today announced it is providing weapons detection to Toyota Center, home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets.

Toyota Center installed Evolv Express® systems earlier this month, making their debut when the Rockets hosted the Utah Jazz on January 20. The systems are used to screen fans entering the arena, which can hold more than 18,000 guests. The Rockets saw the success the Houston Astros (MLB) and Houston Texans (NFL) had with Evolv, and quickly jumped on the opportunity to get Express in place after the NBA recently started to allow applications for this technology.

“We are excited to partner with Evolv Technology to enhance our fan experience while maintaining the safety of our arena,” said Doug Hall, general manager and senior vice president of Toyota Center. “This partnership is focused on utilizing cutting-edge technology to create a safer, faster and better screening process for our guests as they enter Toyota Center.”

Evolv Express uses sensor technology combined with artificial intelligence to pinpoint and distinguish everyday items from potential threats, such as a phone from a firearm. Fans can walk through at normal speed without always stopping for individual security checks, preventing the typical backups at venue entry caused by metal detectors and manual wanding. Toyota Center is the seventh NBA arena to partner with Evolv to screen fans, joining, among others, Ball Arena in Denver.

“There is no greater indication of Evolv’s success than to have customers recommend the technology to each other the way they did in Houston,” said Jay Muelhoefer, Evolv Technology’s chief commercial officer. “We’re thankful for Toyota Center’s partnership and humbled that with the addition of the arena to our roster, close to 50 professional U.S. sports teams now use Evolv.”

Since the launch of Evolv Express in 2019, Evolv has screened more than 1 billion people. Toyota Center is part of a growing list of teams and sports facilities in the United States and around the world using Evolv Technology as part of their safety plans.

Healthcare Leaders Turn To New Screening Technology To Address Workplace Violence

Concealed weapons detection develops safer experiences for nurses and doctors as well as visitors and patients

WALTHAM, Mass. – (January 23, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the modern security technology company transforming threat and weapons detection to create safer experiences, continues to see growth in the healthcare sector as hospital leaders add advanced weapons detection to their safety plans.

With over 70% of workplace violence taking place in a healthcare setting and the majority of emergency physicians saying violence in the emergency department harms patient care, the need to address staff safety has become paramount for many hospital administrators.

Evolv added over a dozen new healthcare customers in the second half of last year, including Parkland Health, one of the largest public hospital systems in the United States, Windsor Regional Health, the 15th largest hospital in Ontario, and the University of Missouri Health Care. Today, Evolv’s Express® concealed weapons detection system, which uses advanced sensors and AI to distinguish everyday items from threats as people move through security at the pace of life, is being used in more than 250 hospital buildings to screen over 400,000 hospital visitors every day, compared to just 40,000 a year ago.

David Musyj, president and CEO of Windsor Regional Hospital said the Express scanners, which were installed in October, have proven to be a huge success since they’ve been installed with over 1,000 weapons being detected so far. “We have successfully stopped a significant number of dangerous items from entering our facility with this new system. Protecting our providers and working to create a safer environment enables the best possible patient care.”

Windsor Regional Hospital’s emergency room operations manager Lisa Gawdunyk, RN added, “I can positively say that not only have we seen noted improvements to our recruitment and retention of staffing in the emergency department, but also improvements to overall staff morale. They feel supported and safe. Patients and families have also been appreciative of the steps WRH is doing to ensure their safety.”

“Since we’ve installed the Express systems in June, we’ve stopped over 500 guns and 200 knives from entering our facility,” said Brian Wade, director of security at Temple University Health.  “We are trying to provide a safe environment for everyone who comes into our hospital and Evolv has been an active layer in our security plan.”
“We had a lot of ED staff telling us they were very concerned about safety. They wanted to be able
to take care of patients and not worry about their safety. When the ED nursing staff found
out that we were putting the Express systems in place, they were very excited,” said David Hall, manager of security services at Southern Ohio Medical Center.

“As business leaders today, we are constantly challenged to look at new ways to create environments of safety from a cultural, physical, psychological, and technology perspective,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health in New York. “Our people are our number one investment. Creating safer environments for them to collaborate and do their best work is essential.”

In addition to hospitals, Evolv’s Technology is used by more than 600 customers worldwide, including over 40 major league sports teams, schools, iconic venues, arenas, and leading theme parks. Evolv Express has screened more than 1 billion people.

Six Evolv Customers to Play on Wild Card Weekend

In my last blog post, I introduced two themes that are worth revisiting on the eve of NFL Wild Card Weekend.  First is the notion – which I would humbly submit is really more of a fact – that “champions choose Evolv.”  Second is the reality that playoff games can pose special challenges for event operators.  This weekend, with six NFL Playoff games, really illustrates both of these themes.

In terms of champions continuing to choose Evolv, I certainly won’t make any predictions, but in the any-given-Sunday NFL, our chances seem pretty good.  Six of Evolv’s 11 NFL team customers are in the playoffs this year.  That’s six of 14 total teams, and at least one Evolv customer is playing in five of the six Wild Card games.  We even have an “Evolv Bowl” of sorts, as the Cleveland Browns travel to the Houston Texans on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking of the Texans and NRG Stadium, this is a great example of a primary Evolv Express® value proposition:  operational simplicity and peace of mind that a persistent problem is solved.  NRG Stadium hosted the College Football Playoff National Championship game on Monday night.  Five days later, the same building will host the Texans’ first home playoff game since 2020.  That’s a huge operational challenge, and ingress is always a concern in the post-season, with added numbers of VIPs and first-time attendees who are unfamiliar with the venue layout.  How nice, then, for the Texans and NRG Stadium staffs to know that ingress is one thing they don’t have to worry about in a very compressed work week.

Best of luck to all 14 NFL teams competing to win Super Bowl LVIII.  My loyalties are clear, except in this weekend’s “Evolv Bowl” where I will be decidedly neutral.  And for the remaining 13 NFL teams that are not yet Evolv customers and already thinking about next season, just a friendly suggestion to add upgraded ingress screening to your planning mix.  We’d love to talk to you about the many reasons why champions choose Evolv.

Citi Field Delivers Transformative Ingress Experience for New York Mets Fans with the Help of Evolv

The importance of fans to the Mets cannot be understated. Fans first is a critical part of Mets’ culture. Part of this involves security screening and ticketing. “We wanted the ingress experience for fans to be frictionless and for them to have a great time,” says Oscar Fernandez, VP of Technology Solutions for the Mets and Citi Field. He continues, “They should come to a game and not worry about the ingress process at all. We want them to enjoy everything; it’s not simply the ballgame but the entire experience.”

Over the past two seasons, the Citi Field team has observed and tested the Evolv Express and witnessed its evolution. The technology adapts to their high-capacity venue very well, meeting their needs and elevating their security posture.

Through implementing the Express, the New York Mets were able to:

  • Reduce security screening footprint by 75%—from 40 walkthrough metal detectors to 11 Ruggedized Evolv Express dual-lane systems
  • Plan real-time verified threat alarm notification through Genetec Security Operations, VMS integration
  • Improve fan experience by making security screening more frictionless and fast

Southern Ohio Medical Center Enables Better Patient Care in Ohio by Prescribing Non-invasive Security Screening with Evolv

Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth Ohio were very close to rolling out a fleet of walkthrough metal detectors a couple years back. “We were very close to rolling out an implementation,” recalls David Hall, SOMC’s Manager of Security Operations. “But the entire process was very invasive. Everyone who goes through a metal detector must remove everything from their pockets and go through it multiple times. The high volume of nuisance alarms was something we didn’t want to deal with.” They knew that they needed something better to serve their staff while not compromising the efficiency of the hospital.

“We had a lot of ED staff telling us they were very concerned about safety,” Hall says. “They wanted to be able to take care of patients and not worry about their safety. Indeed, when the ED nursing staff found out that we were putting the Express systemsb in place, they were very excited. I remember one of the nurses in the meeting where we announced the decision pumping her fist and exclaiming, ‘Yes!’”

Through implementing the Express, Southern Ohio Medical Center was able to:

  • Identify weapons on two individuals within the first hour of deployment.

Pittsburgh’s PNC Park Brings Back the Nostalgic Park Experience With the Help of Evolv

J. McGraw, the Director of PNC Park Operations for the Pittsburgh Pirates, joined PNC
Park two decades ago because of the culture and atmosphere of the Park. Our fans expect the ballpark to be first-rate and for us to anticipate their needs when they come here,” he says. When you come to PNC Park, it starts with all the noise and chatter and the excitement of entering the gates.”

Security has been an important part of PNC Park since it opened and walkthrough metal detectors were installed several years ago. However the limitations of the metal detectors were problematic. “Several years ago, we determined we needed a different approach and embarked on a journey to find a better solution.” That’s when they found Evolv. Hear their story on how they selected and implemented Evolv, as well as how the Evolv Express enabled the Pirates to:

  • Reduce security screening footprint by reducing 40 metal detectors to 12 Evolv Express lanes—a more than 70% reduction.
  • Lower nuisance alarm rate with Evolv compared to metal detectors.
  • Improve NPS ingress scores.
