10 Considerations for Concealed Weapons Detection Comparison Testing

Choosing to invest in a concealed weapons detection solution is a significant decision for security teams and organizations alike.  The solution must help enhance the security of your venue while aligning with your current operations.

When assessing possible systems, conducting independent testing is critical to understanding detection performance, alert rates, and alert resolution. The following outlines ten key considerations as a foundation for conducting fair and accurate comparative testing between systems.

1. Set Up the System in Your Environment: Ensure there is a consistent lane width distance for reliable detection every time. Avoid anyone adjusting the width during testing and assess ADA-compliance based on the recommended lane width.

2. Factor Outdoor Conditions on Detection and Nuisance Alerts: If using the system outdoors, consider the impact of outdoor conditions on system performance. Verify the system is weather-resistant, stable, and doesn’t require additional weight to prevent tipping. Observe how wind affects detection performance and whether it leads to an increase in nuisance alert rates.

3. Grasp Control of Recommended Security Settings: Comprehend the detection performance at the provider’s recommended security setting for your venue. Guarantee that settings are not adjusted between tests with visual verification. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the methods for adjusting or controlling sensitivity, whether through mobile, desktop, or directly on the system.

4. Test with Real, Commonly Carried Firearms: Perform comprehensive detection tests using authentic, commonly carried firearms. Note that test pieces do not always represent the construction and performance of real threats. It’s important to be aware that imitation firearms can easily be purchased online, used during testing, and these replicas are typically made of zinc and will not reliably trigger alerts.

5. Test Firearms in Multiple Positions on the Body: Thoroughly test a range of authentic firearm models across various positions on the body and orientations, all while maintaining consistent sensitivity settings throughout each test. Evaluate the accuracy and consistency of detection at different points on the body from ankle to head.

6. Understand the Threat Resolution Process: When an individual triggers an alert, understand how the system provides visibility into who and where to search. In the absence of a visual showing an image of the person and the targeted threat location, understand the alternative of less effective hand-wanding and error-prone manual pat downs.

7. Comprehend Available Analytics and Security System Integrations: Assess the availability of key data such as visitor arrival curves, alert statistics, detected weapons, and more to enhance operational efficiency. Inquire about regular automated push reports for insights directly to your inbox.

8. Explore Support of Concept of Operations (ConOps): Understand the vendor’s role throughout implementation and go-live in designing operational plans, conducting guard training, offering on-site support, and providing communications for your staff.

9. Verify Compliance, Testing, and Standards: Ensure the system adheres to OSHA’s National Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) production compliance requirement for electronic devices deployed in buildings, has undergone third-party testing (e.g., Metrix NDT Ltd. Etc.), qualifies as an anti-terrorism technology under the DHS SAFETY Act, and verify the highest NILECJ standards met.

10. Assess Accuracy and Consistency: Utilize the above parameters for testing, ensuring an apples-to-apples comparison across systems in terms of 1) detection performance, 2) alert rates, and 3) alert resolution, while also considering the impact on the visitor experience.

Evolv is committed to supporting you throughout the process and beyond. Our team is available to conduct on-site testing, offer additional testing guideline materials, and guide you through the decision-making process.

Using Grant Funding to Create Safer Experiences for Houses of Worship

The current political and social climate in the US and abroad has played a role in creating an environment that may put Houses of Worship and religious institutions at risk for potential violence.

According to the FBI*, religious hate crimes have been on the rise and reported antisemitic hate crimes in the U.S. rose by more than 38 percent in 2022. These threats have manifested themselves in horrible tragedies such as the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in 2018, the First Baptist Church Shooting in 2017, and the Al Noor Mosque Shooting in 2019.

There are a number of solutions for faith leaders and their security professionals to help keep their congregation safe while maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment.

The Federal Government has acknowledged the risk to Houses of Worship and other soft targets and allocates funds through the Nonprofit Security Grant Program to help offset the cost to these groups and institutions looking to improve their security.

Evolv Security Advisory Board Believes Disclosure of Sensitive Information Compromises Public Safety

It has come to our understanding that IPVM, a publication which has historically covered video cameras, continues to promote details of Evolv Express® weapons detection systems. It is our belief that IPVM’s reporting in this matter is irresponsible, and ultimately, could compromise sensitive operating procedures resulting in increased risk to those entering venues we are committed to protecting.

The need to provide transparency in physical security without helping potential attackers and bad actors exploit sensitive information is a fundamental paradox of the security industry. It is an especially careful balance when introducing new security technology, such as AI-based weapons detection, to the mainstream.

As security professionals who have spent our decades-long careers serving the U.S. in national security, law enforcement and military organizations, we understand and respect transparency and dissemination of sensitive information with those essential to know as a tenant to keeping the public safe.

When it comes to the sensitive operational details of physical security systems, including their capabilities and performance characteristics, essential personnel are those who require access to conduct their official duties. This typically relates to those performing security or intelligence roles. Protecting methods and means is a fundamental best practice of any security or intelligence organization.

Evolv is very transparent with their customers and vendors who have a need to know, however, to widely disseminate this sensitive information will undoubtedly have the unintended consequence of providing information to those intent upon exploiting any and all security systems.

The safety of the general public is our primary duty as advisors and national security leaders.

Evolv Technology Corrects Misinformation about the Company

Waltham, Massachusetts – February 20, 2024 – Evolv Technology was founded in 2013 as a next-generation physical security company committed to making the world a safer place. Over a decade later, and with the trust of former leaders of the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Defense, New York Police Department, Office of National Intelligence, Transportation Security Administration, and United States Secret Service, the Company has partnered with hundreds of seasoned security professionals as valued customers. They have vetted and selected Evolv as part of their safety plans due to its performance attributes and track record of balancing accurate detection with a positive security experience for patrons – not because of any advertisement or marketing campaign. Many of these professionals test Evolv products in their operating environment before deployment. Evolv is proud to say that its Express® solution has been used to screen over 1 billion visitors, and is used to detect, on average, hundreds of firearms every day across its rapidly growing customer base.

Over the past year, Evolv believes it has been the target of a short seller campaign, coordinating with certain media outlets, who are incentivized to discredit the company, misrepresent facts, and promote misinformation. Short sellers essentially bet on, and profit from, a drop in a company’s share price.

The following outlines the main points these groups have raised and Evolv’s fact-based responses. Evolv is committed to our mission of making the world safer and stands behind our technology as vetted by hundreds of security professionals in real world environments.

Claim #1:  Evolv has not undergone any independent third-party testing.

Fact: Evolv undergoes rigorous internal and external testing and validation procedures that are implemented before, during, and after the procurement process. All of these third-party tests, conducted by third-party experts, concluded that the Evolv Express solution was highly effective at detecting firearms and many other types of weapons.

Examples of Third-Party Testing and/or expert evaluation [Designations]:

  • DHS SAFETY Act Designation as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology
  • Highest NILECJ Standard Met
  • Metrix NDT Ltd commissioned by Evolv, tested and validated Evolv Express® against the NPSA’s Discriminative Metal Detection Standards.

Claim #2:  Evolv says it can catch all weapons.

Fact: Evolv states, and its customers know, that that there is no perfect security solution, including Evolv Express, that will stop all threats, all the time, and that a layered approach combining people, process and technology is necessary. Yet, they choose Evolv Express to help them meet some of their most demanding security requirements because among other things: (a) Evolv Express is highly effective at detecting firearms and other mass casualty weapons; (b) it has a high throughput rate; (c) its settings can be adjusted and optimized to meet a customer’s unique security screening requirements; and (d) the use of the Evolv Express solution can help reduce labor costs.

When Evolv Express alerts on a weapon, the system still requires human security operators to remove the potential threat from the environment. This is why Evolv works with customers to improve their overall security processes and shares best practices across our community. Evolv Express is a modern component of layered security to help reduce the risk of something bad happening.

Evolv has repeatedly said that keeping the public safe and mitigating risk requires tradeoffs; for example, higher sensitivity settings may slow down the screening process. Evolv is upfront about the tradeoffs and customers regularly call out this as a key source of trust in Evolv and across the Evolv customer community.

Evolv Express systems are designed to configure various levels of a security profile, which are selected by the customer, based on their specific needs and events. These security profiles and configurations vary widely across venue and experience type and are at the discretion of the customer’s security team, who often change settings hourly to recognize different threats; for example, a school morning ingress versus an evening sporting event.

Claim #3:  Evolv misleads the public and customers to sell systems.

Fact:  Evolv’s customers rely on real-world performance metrics, testimonials and information obtained from other users in their respective industries, and often their own testing of Evolv Express, to guide their purchase decisions.

Evolv works with some of the country’s top brands and school districts, such as Mercedes-Benz Stadium (home to the Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United), SoFi Stadium (home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers) and YouTube Theater, Six Flags, TD Garden (home of the NHL’s Boston Bruins and NBA’s Boston Celtics), and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.

Customers typically purchase Evolv Express only after engaging in testing, trials and procurement processes that can last months or longer, including speaking with other Evolv customers about their real-world usage of Evolv Express before purchase. Certain customers, such as teams and venues within the NFL, MLB and NHL, comply with mandatory procurement standards (e.g., government entities) or obtain third-party approvals (e.g., league approval for professional sports teams) before making a purchase. Many of our customers have extensive security backgrounds both in the private and governmental sectors from around the world.

Claim #4:  Evolv regularly misses weapons.

Fact:  Evolv detected 400,000 weapons in 2023, including firearms and knives.

Customers frequently report that the Evolv Express systems have stopped weapons from entering their environments.  That being said, nothing is perfect all the time. Evolv customers are keenly aware of the fact that safety is never absolute. Rather, Evolv customers balance safety needs with venue requirements (e.g., avoiding crowds or long lines at security checkpoints) which is not an either/or choice but a strategy that relies on a combination of people, processes and technology.

There have been circumstances where a firearm was found inside a customer’s venue but with no evidence that the weapon had passed through the Evolv Express system. However, certain media entities have perpetuated misinformation by implying otherwise.

Examples:

  • At a theme park, the police made an arrest and were investigating fence jumping, or items thrown over the fence, as possibilities of how a firearm entered the park. It was not reported or confirmed that a gun went through the Evolv Express system.
  • Similarly, in North Mecklenburg High School, school officials made public statements asserting that the student carrying a weapon did not go through an Evolv system.

Yet select news services are choosing to ignore these statements and instead mislead by stating “Evolv missed the gun” to fit their desired false narrative.

Claim #5:  Evolv can’t catch knives.

Fact:  Evolv Express was specifically designed to detect guns but will also alert on many types of knives and some explosives.

Evolv Express was purposefully designed to detect firearms and mass casualty weapons. That’s why customers come to Evolv as part of their layered security strategy. In fact, in many instances, such as in schools, knives are already present inside the venue for various reasons. Even so, according to customer reported data, Evolv Express systems detected over 80,000 knives in 2022 and over 200,000 knives in 2023.

Example:  Windsor Regional Hospital has reported over 1,100 items intercepted since the installation of the Express system, including detecting hundreds of knives.

Claim #6:  Evolv can’t back up its through-put claims.

Fact:  Throughput rates for Evolv Express have been repeatedly observed in data collected during real-world operations.

  • Customer Example 1, NFL Game, 2023 – a dual wide lane Express unit screened approximately 5,152 people in one hour, including the screening of 2,713 people in a twenty-minute period, with an alert rate of just 5%
  • Customer Example 2, MLB Game, 2023 – a dual wide lane Express unit screened approximately 5,746 people in one hour, including the screening of 2,291 people in a ten-minute period, with an alert rate of just 4%
  • Customer Example 3, NFL Game, 2023 – a dual wide lane Express unit screened approximately 5,461 people in one hour, including the screening of 1,407 people in a ten-minute period, with an alert rate of just 5%

In fact, Evolv systems are designed specifically to allow for venues to efficiently screen high volumes of people without impacting visitor experience. This is due to the localized threat detection (i.e., the red box that pinpoints an area of concern) which not only reduces the burden on security teams to identify threats but also reduces the soft target of long lines or crowds around checkpoints, as well as reducing the potential for human error and bias.

Claim #7:  Evolv paid for third-party testing and tried to manipulate the results.

Fact:  Evolv elected to participate in the NCS⁴ operational exercise, sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi, to offer another data point for those considering the technology.  All companies must pay to participate in the exercise, which reviews security vendors in sports and entertainment venues.

By design, the NCS⁴ operational exercise program allows experts to observe technology capabilities in a sports environment. School customers test and/or review our systems in school environments.

The NCS⁴ operational exercise program has an associated fee for all manufacturers completing the process.

Contrary to misleading claims, Evolv did not change results of the third-party NCS⁴ report, and all customers and serious prospective customers are offered full access to the complete NCS⁴ testing report upon request.  In addition to providing access to the report, Evolv will also walk prospective customers through the complete NCS4 report (as well as other third-party testing reports) during a 90-minute briefing.

Claim #8:  Evolv shouldn’t use the terms “weapons detector” or “frictionless” because it is misleading.

FACT:  Customers invest in Evolv after carefully assessing the technology during procurement, including reviewing literature, receiving a demo or pilot, visiting and speaking with other customers, and all customers have an opportunity to conduct testing in their actual environment.

Evolv’s sophisticated business-to-business customers, many of whom are themselves security experts and/or engage third-party experts, purchase Evolv Express with the specific goal of helping to detect and deter threats like firearms that could cause a mass-casualty event. Evolv’s technology is deployed at over 650 customers across many markets including education, healthcare, professional sports, industrial workplaces, houses of worship and tourist attractions.

Open Letter to Security Professionals

We have served this country in national security, law enforcement and military organizations. Each of us has decades of experience keeping our Homeland safe, here and abroad. Our experience spans the use of technology, intelligence, people, and assets to keep our country safe.

We have a combined 150 years’ experience, having served in leadership positions in the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Defense, New York Police Department, Office of National Intelligence, Transportation Security Administration, and United States Secret Service.

Today, we serve as advisors to Evolv Technology. We have known this company for years; many of us have worked with Evolv for nearly a decade. Our work has included reviewing the current business and products of Evolv, discussions with customers on their use of the technology, and discussing new product concepts. We know the company well, we know the people who run it, and regularly meet with Evolv and their customers.

We believe that Evolv and its management are dedicated to their mission to Make the World a Safer Place. They are committed to understanding the best use of their products, making improvements to the technology over time, and finding ways they can help their customers achieve their security objectives.

We have seen a wide variety of security technologies over our careers. The Evolv Express system provides an innovative approach to screening people, differentiating weapons from personal items as people walk through without always having to stop. We have seen the Evolv Express’ capabilities improve over time through both technological improvements and a deeper understanding of operational environments. Evolv combines the knowledge of security experts, experience operating thousands of systems screening millions of people, best in class engineers, committed workforce, continuous understanding of customers’ needs, and awareness of current threats to improve the technology and provide guidance on how it can best be used. The company cares deeply about ensuring customers and security professionals fully understand the system and they operate with high integrity in discussions about their technology and its capabilities.

Finally, we strongly believe that a security plan should include multiple layers to address different threat vectors and provide redundancy. These layers include people, process and technology working together. There is no single layer of security that will provide 100% security, that is why there are multiple layers which have proven to be the most successful in mitigating the highest degree of risk. Evolv’s solutions can be an important security technology to help detect and prevent threats from entering prohibited areas.

Gun Violence in America: A Survey on Americans’ Anxiety

In November 2021, we launched our inaugural report to look at the impact gun violence has on Americans’ lives. We wanted to understand whether a shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado impacted someone on the other side of the country; to measure Americans’ collective anxiety around the pervasive gun violence; and to determine whether gun violence is on people’s minds when they perform everyday tasks, like going to the grocery store. While we expected a certain level of anxiety, the numbers that came back shocked us. But twelve months later, our second-annual report paints an even bleaker picture, one of a citizenry that is exhausted and frustrated, and willing to alter their behavior in order to create safer places. Our neighbors and fellow citizens want to be safe when they go to the grocery store, to see a movie, visit a theme park and go to school.

  • Of the Americans who own a gun and report carrying it with them, two-thirds say they are doing so more today than in 2021.
  • 36% of Americans believe they (or someone they love) are extremely/likely to encounter an active shooter in their lifetime. That is up from 29% in 2021.
  • A large majority of Americans – 88% – believe their chances of encountering an active shooter have increased in 2022.
  • Nearly 3 out of 10 Americans have thought about moving out of fear of gun violence against themselves or their family. This is up from 12% in 2021.

America’s gun violence is taking a significant toll on educators

For this year’s report, in addition to the general population, we collected insights from educators in an effort to understand how the nation’s gun violence is impacting them. The results are sobering and reveal the significant toll it is taking on our teachers.

  • 1 in 3 educators report that they have experienced a shooting at work/in a school setting, and 51% believe they are likely or extremely likely to encounter an active shooting at work in their lifetime.
  • Nearly 4 in 10 teachers report they are considering looking for another job because they don’t feel safe at work. Of those, 82% would like to change jobs within the next six months.
  • 26% have been threatened directly by at least one of their students.
  • 3 out of 10 educators say they have to take more mental health breaks in order to cope with their increased levels of anxiety.

Our director of education and former assistant superintendent of safety and school operations for Oxford Community Schools, Jill Lemond, said:

“These findings highlight a need for us, as a country, to do better for our educators. Unfortunately, we haven’t equipped schools to deal with the anxiety, fear, and trauma students are bringing into the classroom. As a result, those on the frontlines – most of whom haven’t been trained in mental health – are bearing the burden of this national crisis. We are asking too much of them, and this research reveals the toll that is taking.”

As a father whose daughter walks into a school building every day to teach second graders, these findings hit very close to home. We need to recognize that a nation without healthy, happy and supported teachers cannot be a place where new ideas thrive and innovation is cultivated.

While this year’s report does not offer a solution, it does help us understand the toll gun violence is taking on all Americans, not just those who have been directly affected by it. It is my hope that with this better understanding, we can begin to work together to find solutions that reduce the amount of violence, lower Americans’ anxiety and retain the freedoms and liberties we have come to love in this country.

New Research: 88% of Americans Are Anxious About Gun Violence; Nearly Half of Gun Owners Report Carrying Their Weapons More as a Result

The survey, commissioned by Evolv Technology, quantifies Americans’ perceptions of gun violence and its impact on behavior

Waltham, Mass. (April 12, 2023) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leader in AI-based weapons detection security screening, today announced the findings of a study – Gun Violence in America: A Survey on Americans’ Anxiety – it commissioned with market research firm Equation Research that reveals the toll gun violence is taking on Americans. The second-annual report highlights a dramatic increase in anxiety – and changes in behavior as a result – over the past 12 months.

Key findings:

  • 85% believe gun violence is a problem in America (vs. 78% in 2021)
  • More than one-third believe it is likely they will encounter an active shooter in their lifetime (vs. 28% in 2021)
  • Nearly 3 in 10 Americans have thought about moving [from their current home/location] out of fear of gun violence (vs. 12% in 2021)
  • 22% believe they are more at risk of encountering an active shooter based on their religious affiliation (vs. 15.3% in 2021)
  • Nearly half (47%) of gun owners say they are carrying their guns with them more today due to the increase in gun violence
  • 1 in 5 non-gun-owning Americans say they plan to buy a gun; more than half indicating it’s as a result of America’s increase in gun violence

“We believe this research demonstrates that, as Americans, we are all suffering collectively,” said Peter George, CEO, Evolv Technology. “Rather than becoming numb to the rise in gun violence, people are reporting that their anxiety levels are on the rise – and impacting other areas of their lives. It is making them reconsider the way they live their lives. The study shows increases in the number of people who have thought about moving and those who report higher levels of anxiety when they go to the movies and into a grocery store. It’s imperative that we learn from these findings and identify ways to address these rising levels of fear so we can all live, work, learn and play safely – without paralyzing levels of anxiety.”

Anxiety is high among parents

Following school shootings in Uvalde, Texas (May 2022) and Oxford, Michigan (November 2021), the research reveals that anxiety among people with children is high.

  • Half of the households with children have considered homeschooling their children out of fear of gun violence
  • 1 out of 2 have purchased, or are considering purchasing, “gun safety” materials, such as bulletproof backpacks
  • Of those, 1 out of 4 did so because their children asked for them
  • 3 out of 4 parents indicate that their child(ren) has some anxiety about school shootings
  • 54% report their child(ren)’s anxiety has increased since 2020

The findings highlight that Americans are concerned about the risk of shootings in everyday locations, but for many, some places provoke higher levels of anxiety than others.

  • Thirty-seven percent (37%) of Americans list “large gatherings” as the top answer when asked where they have increased anxiety as a result of gun violence and/or terrorist activity (vs. 31% in 2021)
  • Americans report increased levels of extreme/moderate anxiety at the following everyday places:
  • Bar/night club: 71% (vs. 68% in 2021)
  • Work: 60% (vs. 53% in 2021)
  • Places of worship: 60% (vs. 58% in 2021)
  • Movie theater: 64% (vs. 61% in 2021)

The pervasive feeling of anxiety and worry carries over into what Americans are willing to do in order to reduce the threat of a mass shooting. When asked whether they would be willing to go through extra steps [to reduce those threats] at everyday locations, such as the grocery store, workplace or movie theater, they answered:

  • Go through weapons detection screening: 67% (vs. 57% in 2021)
  • Have bags checked: 59% (vs. 46%)
  • Check guns at the door: 48% (vs. 44%)
  • Be patted down by a security professional: 46% (vs. 37%)
  • Only 12% would not be willing to go through these extra steps (vs. 22% in 2021)
  • 3 out of 4 report feeling safer at places that screen for and do not allow weapons inside

Evolv Technology Recognizes Milestone Year in Company’s History

Over 500 customers across the US partnering with Evolv as part of a layered approach to security

WALTHAM, Mass. – (March 16, 2023) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leader in AI-based weapons detection security screening, is now partnering with venues in 45 U.S. states as well as Puerto Rico, as security professionals from sports stadiums and theme parks to schools and hospitals integrate advanced weapons screening technology into their layers of safety planning. The Company more than doubled its customer base in 2022, working towards its mission of making the world a safer place for people to live, learn, work and play.

“We have now screened over a half a billion visitors, reflecting our rapidly expanding customer base in healthcare, education and industrial workplaces,” said Peter George, CEO of Evolv Technology. “We are committed to provide innovative solutions for our customers, and to serve as partners in their safety operations.  And, we are driven to continue to improve.”

Evolv is helping to make a fundamental difference in venue safety as part of a layered approach to security. To that end, Evolv customers used the Evolv Express® system to tag over 176,000 weapons in 2022 – including 93,000 guns and 83,000 knives carried by visitors entering venues (not including those tagged by customers as law enforcement). In the fourth quarter of 2022 alone, Evolv customers tagged nearly 70,000 weapons – including 36,000 guns and 33,000 knives. That’s an average of about 400 guns every single day being stopped from entering venues where weapons are prohibited at the end of last year.

Through a combination of powerful sensor technology, proven AI, and comprehensive analytics, Evolv Express scans for concealed weapons without imposing the negative, inconvenient, or anxiety-inducing procedures that can accompany metal detectors. Evolv Express uses AI to instantly distinguish threats from most everyday objects, such as keys and cellphones, as people walk through at the pace of life. Unlike metal detectors and their newer upgrades, Evolv Express flags the precise location of a potential threat so that guards can respond in a more efficient manner towards incident resolution rather than requiring invasive and time-consuming procedures such as wanding, body searches and “yo-yo’ing” an individual through a system until the issue is resolved.

“For those who set off an alarm, the secondary screening check is immensely easier and creates much less friction than it did before with the metal detectors. We know exactly where the alert is located on the body by seeing it pinpointed on the Evolv Express tablet, so verification and remediation of the threat is much faster and less invasive,” said Brandon Covert, Haslam Sports Group VP of IT, operator of FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland Browns.

“Conducting manual security checks was taking up to an hour of time each morning, and it wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience for our students or faculty,” said Mark Laurrie, Niagara Falls City School District Superintendent, adding “Evolv is the best that is out there for schools.”

“I spent a significant amount of time speaking with Evolv customers and dove into how the technology works,” said Otto Benedict, SVP of Facility and Campus Operations at SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, one of the dozens of stadiums using Evolv. “We also looked at some other non-metal-detector alternatives. We really did our homework. There was a sense of being overwhelmed with the metal detectors. That is no longer the case with Evolv.”

Evolv Technology Works To Set Standards for Sensitive Information in the Physical Security Industry

Leading security experts agree that too much transparency compromises the public’s safety

WALTHAM, MA (August 10, 2022)Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV, “Evolv”), the global leader in AI-based weapons detection security screening, recently surveyed security professionals at Evolv’s customers’ organizations on the topic of transparency and sensitive security information and reports that 96% of the two dozen respondents believe that such information should not be made available to the general public.

The need to provide transparency without helping potential attackers is a fundamental paradox of the security industry. While aviation security has clear specifications classified by the Transportation Security Administration in the US and European Civil Aviation Conference in the EU, other venues for which advanced security screening is being used have not yet formalized set standards around transparency.

Evolv is working to set that standard. The company discloses sensitive information only to trusted security partners to prevent the exposure of potential vulnerabilities and compromising customers’ security plans. The Company recently underwent NCS⁴’s operational exercise with its Evolv Express® system and earned an overall composite score of 2.84 out of 3 and chose not to make the full report public as part of the Evolv transparency statement. It is a position agreed to by leading security experts as methods of advanced screening continue to be used in more venues around the world.

“The less that is shared with the general public the better chance we all have at someone not finding a weak point in any security posture,” said one of the survey respondents.

“People who say that absolute transparency is best simply don’t understand the security business,” said John Pistole, former administrator of the United States TSA and a former deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “They apparently don’t have an informed perspective or insight into just how determined bad actors are in their efforts to harm individuals, countries, and companies.”

“Security professionals do not want anyone to release information that helps attackers defeat their systems,” said Randy Smith, western region director, Security Detection. “Fans, students, concertgoers, and healthcare workers have a right to their safety. To release sensitive security information is irresponsible and potentially life threatening.”

“Similar to cybersecurity and counterterrorism, protecting the methods and means, and sharing them only with trusted security partners is critical to preventing the exposure of potential vulnerabilities. All systems have weaknesses. In aviation, it’s illegal for the people who know all the details to share them publicly,” said Mike Ellenbogen, cofounder and chief innovation officer at Evolv. “Established security experts understand the basic requirement to keep detailed sensitive information away from anybody who might use the information to exploit or attempt to penetrate a physical security system, and that includes the general public. Those who are saying otherwise truly do not understand the industry and are putting the public at risk. Evolv’s mission is to make everywhere safer. Public disclosure of sensitive security information objectively makes people less safe.”

Evolv is committed to working with customers, partners, and other trusted security professionals to develop best practices on sharing sensitive security information to the general public. Keeping the public safe requires an important balance of sharing sensitive information with trusted security partners while also keeping it out of the hands of adversaries in an ever-changing threat landscape.

Evolv surveyed its customer base of security professionals on the topic of transparency of sensitive information in July 2022. Respondents represent – and are responsible for the physical security at – schools, sports stadiums, performing arts centers, tourist locations, museums, and theme parks around the US.
