10 Considerations for Concealed Weapons Detection Comparison Testing
Choosing to invest in a concealed weapons detection solution is a significant decision for security teams and organizations alike. The solution must help enhance the security of your venue while aligning with your current operations.
When assessing possible systems, conducting independent testing is critical to understanding detection performance, alert rates, and alert resolution. The following outlines ten key considerations as a foundation for conducting fair and accurate comparative testing between systems.
1. Set Up the System in Your Environment: Ensure there is a consistent lane width distance for reliable detection every time. Avoid anyone adjusting the width during testing and assess ADA-compliance based on the recommended lane width.
2. Factor Outdoor Conditions on Detection and Nuisance Alerts: If using the system outdoors, consider the impact of outdoor conditions on system performance. Verify the system is weather-resistant, stable, and doesn’t require additional weight to prevent tipping. Observe how wind affects detection performance and whether it leads to an increase in nuisance alert rates.
3. Grasp Control of Recommended Security Settings: Comprehend the detection performance at the provider’s recommended security setting for your venue. Guarantee that settings are not adjusted between tests with visual verification. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the methods for adjusting or controlling sensitivity, whether through mobile, desktop, or directly on the system.
4. Test with Real, Commonly Carried Firearms: Perform comprehensive detection tests using authentic, commonly carried firearms. Note that test pieces do not always represent the construction and performance of real threats. It’s important to be aware that imitation firearms can easily be purchased online, used during testing, and these replicas are typically made of zinc and will not reliably trigger alerts.
5. Test Firearms in Multiple Positions on the Body: Thoroughly test a range of authentic firearm models across various positions on the body and orientations, all while maintaining consistent sensitivity settings throughout each test. Evaluate the accuracy and consistency of detection at different points on the body from ankle to head.
6. Understand the Threat Resolution Process: When an individual triggers an alert, understand how the system provides visibility into who and where to search. In the absence of a visual showing an image of the person and the targeted threat location, understand the alternative of less effective hand-wanding and error-prone manual pat downs.
7. Comprehend Available Analytics and Security System Integrations: Assess the availability of key data such as visitor arrival curves, alert statistics, detected weapons, and more to enhance operational efficiency. Inquire about regular automated push reports for insights directly to your inbox.
8. Explore Support of Concept of Operations (ConOps): Understand the vendor’s role throughout implementation and go-live in designing operational plans, conducting guard training, offering on-site support, and providing communications for your staff.
9. Verify Compliance, Testing, and Standards: Ensure the system adheres to OSHA’s National Recognized Test Laboratory (NRTL) production compliance requirement for electronic devices deployed in buildings, has undergone third-party testing (e.g., Metrix NDT Ltd. Etc.), qualifies as an anti-terrorism technology under the DHS SAFETY Act, and verify the highest NILECJ standards met.
10. Assess Accuracy and Consistency: Utilize the above parameters for testing, ensuring an apples-to-apples comparison across systems in terms of 1) detection performance, 2) alert rates, and 3) alert resolution, while also considering the impact on the visitor experience.
Evolv is committed to supporting you throughout the process and beyond. Our team is available to conduct on-site testing, offer additional testing guideline materials, and guide you through the decision-making process.

The First College to Deploy Evolv, Cape Fear Community College Renews Evolv Relationship for Improved Efficiency and Guest Experience
Cape Fear Community College was a first adopter back in June 2019 of the predecessor of the Evolv Express®, known as Evolv Edge®. Fast forward to 2021 with the launch of the Evolv Express, CFCC was immediately interested in the upgrade.
Norm Berth, Guest Experience Specialist at CFCC says “…due to the relationship we have with Evolv and the success we had as an early adopter of the technology, we didn’t look at alternatives to the Express,” he says. “The relationship has also evolved over time, and Evolv has added operational infrastructure and processes to ensure we get the support we need. By upgrading and installing the Evolv Express systems, Cape Fear Community College was able to achieve the following:
- Cut average time for secondary security checks to 10 to 15 seconds— a 200% reduction
- Identified and tagged 47 firearms since deploying the Express system in 2023
- Increased time in concessions—and revenue from sales—before the start of shows

eBook: The Impact of Invasive Security Screening for K-12 Students
Finding the Right Balance Between School Safety and a Positive Student Experience
In recent years, K-12 schools all over the country have been ramping up security measures to create safer campuses for their students — largely in response to school shootings that have been gripping national headlines. Traditional metal detectors and more portable metal detectors are among the various types of solutions that schools have been adding to their physical security efforts, as part of their layered security approach.
While traditional screening methods can help in stopping weapons from entering campus and deterring potentially dangerous incidents, schools have cited that these methods can be problematic.
In this eBook, we explore four ways that invasive security screening negatively impacts students followed by how schools can avoid these harmful effects with a more guided weapons detection solution that allows for directed and unbiased searches.

Evolv Technology Teams up With Pittsburgh Pirates to Support Community Groups Providing Education and Mentoring Experiences for Local Youth
Company and team provide high-profile First Pitch experiences at Pirates home games to help raise awareness of three youth-focused non-profits active in the region.
WALTHAM, Mass. (May 8, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based weapons detection to create safer experiences, today shared details about its season-long community relations program with the Pittsburgh Pirates. This program is an element of Evolv’s broader partnership with the ballclub, through which the company is designated as the team’s Official Screening Partner. Evolv is a trusted security partner to a number organizations in the Pittsburgh community, including the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Acrisure Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and PNC Park.
One joint initiative of the Evolv and Pirates community effort focuses on the team’s First Pitch experience, in which a representative of a Pittsburgh-area community organization has the honor of throwing out the first pitch before the start of a Pirates home game. For 2024, Evolv has enabled three such organizations to have this unique experience and opportunity for enhanced visibility:
- The Pittsburgh Promise, located in downtown Pittsburgh, fosters educational achievement among urban youth and funds scholarships for post-secondary schooling. The organization, founded by local sports legend Franco Harris, shares Evolv’s belief that physical safety at school improves the quality of the learning environment.
- A Kid Again, a national organization with a local chapter in Pittsburgh, offers free events and activities to families with a child who faces a life-threatening condition. Many of the recipients have long hospital stays and are likely impacted by hospital security needs and procedures.
- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh, based in the city’s East Liberty neighborhood, is the region’s leading youth mentoring organization, matching children who seek a mentor with caring adults. (Upcoming First Pitch dates: August 3, 2024; and September 7, 2024)
“We are thrilled to share the benefits of our Pirates partnership with such worthy organizations,” said John Baier, Evolv’s vice president of sports. “Our commitment to the communities we serve extends beyond security and we are honored to help raise visibility for these organizations doing important work to support children, their families, and the Pittsburgh community at large. Seeing these real-world beneficiaries motivates all Evolvers to continue to execute on the company’s mission of making the world a safer place for people to gather.”
In addition to this initiative, each season Evolv donates dozens of Pirates game tickets to community organizations, schools, and hospitals throughout the Pittsburgh area to provide opportunities for fun and memorable community experiences.
Beyond the Pirates, Evolv has official partnerships with 40 other sports teams across the American professional leagues and collegiate conferences. In addition to sports venues, Evolv’s technology helps secure leading theme parks, performing arts centers, casinos, places of worship and hundreds of schools and hospitals across the U.S. and has screened 1 billion people since 2019.

Cape Fear Community College Enhances Safety at Wilson Center With Evolv Technology
Partnership Expands Company’s Higher Education, Carolinas Customers List
WALTHAM, Mass. – (May 3, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based screening to create safer experiences, today announced its partnership with Cape Fear Community College.
The Wilmington, North Carolina school uses an Evolv Express® system to screen guests at the main entrance to the Wilson Center, the college’s performing arts venue. Cape Fear Community College has used Evolv weapons detection technology since 2019, making the transition from antiquated methods of screening guests after a school official saw Evolv in action at Lincoln Center in New York City. The school used the first iteration of Evolv’s screening system for several years and upgraded to Express in 2023.
Evolv Express uses sensor technology combined with AI to differentiate between threats and the kinds of everyday metal objects people carry in their pockets. This helps guests walk through without always stopping for individual checks, which can create backups at entry points. Prior to its use of Evolv, guests entering the Wilson Center were subject to manual bag searches and individual screenings by hand wands.
“Our security screening process prior to implementing Evolv was cumbersome and unsustainable,” said Tammy Daniels, senior managing director of the Wilson Center. “When I saw how quickly the system up leveled the safety of our venue and guests, I was so happy I was brought to tears.”
The expedited entry process Evolv helps guests spend time inside the venue versus waiting in line. At the Wilson Center, a state-of-the-art theater which hosts plays, popular musical acts, and concerts, and seats roughly 1,600 people, having Express in place has made a marked improvement.
“Cape Fear Community College exemplifies the breadth of venues that Evolv helps keep safer,” said Jay Muelhoefer, chief commercial officer for Evolv Technology. “Evolv is used in schools and performing arts spaces of all sizes around the country, and Cape Fear Community College joins a long – and growing – list of partnerships we have with customers in the Carolinas. We’re immensely proud to help protect the Wilson Center and further establish Evolv’s presence in the Southeast.”
In addition to a number of schools in North and South Carolina using Evolv for weapons detection, Charlotte is home to several sports facilities screening fans with the help of Evolv where the pro soccer team FC Charlotte and pro basketball team Charlotte Hornets play.
Beyond schools, performing arts centers, stadiums, and arenas, Evolv’s more than 700 customers include leading theme parks, casinos, places of worship, and hospitals.

Belmont Becomes First Tennessee University To Partner With Evolv Technology
Fellow notable Nashville customers include Nissan Stadium, Bridgestone Arena, Nashville Soccer Club and Opry Entertainment Group
WALTHAM, Mass. – (May 3, 2024) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leading security technology company pioneering AI-based screening to create safer experiences, today announced its partnership with Belmont University. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the university began using Evolv Express® for weapons detection at its Curb Event Center Arena late last year.
Evolv Express uses sensor technology combined with artificial intelligence to differentiate between threats and the kinds of common metal objects people carry. The multipurpose arena, which can accommodate 5,000 seated guests, uses Express systems to screen guests attending basketball and volleyball games, concerts and other activities.
The arena joins a growing list of performing arts, sports and entertainment venues in Music City that use Express to enhance safety and elevate the guest experience. The Tennessee Titans have used Express for the past three seasons, while neighboring Bridgestone Arena became the first professional hockey Evolv partner more than a year ago. Opry Entertainment Group experienced the benefits of Express when the system was deployed at the iconic Grande Ole Opry.
“Venue management professionals are a tight-knit community, and we share what works and what doesn’t with one another,” said Andrea Runner, senior director of business operations and special projects at Belmont University. “There’s a buzz about Evolv across the city, and as Nashvillians, we’ve experienced Evolv first-hand at a number of venues locally. We needed our weapons detection partner to be on par with the university in terms of being innovative while also providing a seamless customer experience, and Express fits the bill.”
While Belmont is the first university in the state – and city of Nashville – to use Express, many school districts in Tennessee partner with Evolv. Nationally, the company’s solutions are in more than 800 school buildings and screen roughly 600,000 students daily.
“Nashville is an example of a city – similar to a number of other major metros like Boston, Denver and Houston – where Evolv is now an expectation because it’s used so widely,” said Jay Muelhoefer, chief commercial officer for Evolv Technology. “Belmont is an exemplary educational institution, and now, it’s leading the way for other centers of higher education in using the best available technology to protect students, faculty, staff and other guests.”

Whitepaper: Purchasing Security Systems for K-12 Schools: Procurement Trends, Resources, and Best Practices
K-12 school districts have had to overcome a number of major hurdles in recent years.
Schools had to bounce back from a pandemic that disrupted the traditional educational process and exacerbated teacher shortages. Once they returned to on-campus instruction, they were faced with increased levels of mental and emotional distress among students and staff as well as heightened anxiety from increased violence and several deadly school shootings occurring throughout the U.S.
In an effort to create safer and more stable learning environments for students, and safer workplaces for teachers and staff, many schools have made considerable investments in improving their security posture.
In addition to adding resources to increase support for social and emotional well-being, many school leaders are investing in new technologies and upgrades of existing technologies for their campuses.
These include technologies such as:
- Access control systems
- Video surveillance systems
- Weapons detection systems
- Mass notification systems
- Panic buttons
- Anonymous tip reporting
As districts continue to make these investments, it is important for them to be aware of the various funding sources and procurement methods available to them. To provide K-12 schools with guidance, this whitepaper offers information on recent contracting and campus security spending trends in the education sector as well as a list of procurement methods that school leaders may want to consider as they invest in new safety solutions.
