Boston College Students’ Safety and Experience Soars with the Deployment of Evolv Express®

Boston College has a rich tradition in athletics, touting the Alumni Stadium which holds 45,000 football fans, and a basketball and hockey center, Conte Forum, that holds 8,600 fans for basketball and 7,500 for hockey. The college also has a softball field with a capacity of 2,500 and a lacrosse field with a capacity of 2,000.

Around 2019, Conway and his team evaluated walkthrough metal detectors and ultimately determined they were not the right fit for the campus. The Boston College team continued its search for a different security screening approach and discovered it due to a chance encounter with Evolv Technology. Conway cites several reasons why everyone at Boston College felt Evolv was the right decision for the university, from screening accuracy to student experience and data insights. Another key aspect of the decision was also Evolv’s dedication to education and to creating safer environments for students, something especially important in a college campus.

With Evolv Express systems in place, Boston College has seen its security lines almost disappear depending on the event and the particular entrance. Because students and fans are getting into venues faster, they are spending more in concessions and retail shops. The response to Evolv from the Boston College “family” has been overwhelmingly positive per Conway.

By enabling the Evolv Express®, Boston College was able to achieve the following:

  • Shrink time for stadium ingress (arrival to seats) by more than 50%.
  • Redeploy Express systems quickly and easily between locations.
  • Increase concession and retail store spending.
  • Integrate the Express mass communication feature with local police for faster emergency responses.

Evolv Security Advisory Board Believes Disclosure of Sensitive Information Compromises Public Safety

It has come to our understanding that IPVM, a publication which has historically covered video cameras, continues to promote details of Evolv Express® weapons detection systems. It is our belief that IPVM’s reporting in this matter is irresponsible, and ultimately, could compromise sensitive operating procedures resulting in increased risk to those entering venues we are committed to protecting.

The need to provide transparency in physical security without helping potential attackers and bad actors exploit sensitive information is a fundamental paradox of the security industry. It is an especially careful balance when introducing new security technology, such as AI-based weapons detection, to the mainstream.

As security professionals who have spent our decades-long careers serving the U.S. in national security, law enforcement and military organizations, we understand and respect transparency and dissemination of sensitive information with those essential to know as a tenant to keeping the public safe.

When it comes to the sensitive operational details of physical security systems, including their capabilities and performance characteristics, essential personnel are those who require access to conduct their official duties. This typically relates to those performing security or intelligence roles. Protecting methods and means is a fundamental best practice of any security or intelligence organization.

Evolv is very transparent with their customers and vendors who have a need to know, however, to widely disseminate this sensitive information will undoubtedly have the unintended consequence of providing information to those intent upon exploiting any and all security systems.

The safety of the general public is our primary duty as advisors and national security leaders.

Evolv Technology Corrects Misinformation about the Company

Waltham, Massachusetts – February 20, 2024 – Evolv Technology was founded in 2013 as a next-generation physical security company committed to making the world a safer place. Over a decade later, and with the trust of former leaders of the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Defense, New York Police Department, Office of National Intelligence, Transportation Security Administration, and United States Secret Service, the Company has partnered with hundreds of seasoned security professionals as valued customers. They have vetted and selected Evolv as part of their safety plans due to its performance attributes and track record of balancing accurate detection with a positive security experience for patrons – not because of any advertisement or marketing campaign. Many of these professionals test Evolv products in their operating environment before deployment. Evolv is proud to say that its Express® solution has been used to screen over 1 billion visitors, and is used to detect, on average, hundreds of firearms every day across its rapidly growing customer base.

Over the past year, Evolv believes it has been the target of a short seller campaign, coordinating with certain media outlets, who are incentivized to discredit the company, misrepresent facts, and promote misinformation. Short sellers essentially bet on, and profit from, a drop in a company’s share price.

The following outlines the main points these groups have raised and Evolv’s fact-based responses. Evolv is committed to our mission of making the world safer and stands behind our technology as vetted by hundreds of security professionals in real world environments.

Claim #1:  Evolv has not undergone any independent third-party testing.

Fact: Evolv undergoes rigorous internal and external testing and validation procedures that are implemented before, during, and after the procurement process. All of these third-party tests, conducted by third-party experts, concluded that the Evolv Express solution was highly effective at detecting firearms and many other types of weapons.

Examples of Third-Party Testing and/or expert evaluation [Designations]:

  • DHS SAFETY Act Designation as a Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology
  • Highest NILECJ Standard Met
  • Metrix NDT Ltd commissioned by Evolv, tested and validated Evolv Express® against the NPSA’s Discriminative Metal Detection Standards.

Claim #2:  Evolv says it can catch all weapons.

Fact: Evolv states, and its customers know, that that there is no perfect security solution, including Evolv Express, that will stop all threats, all the time, and that a layered approach combining people, process and technology is necessary. Yet, they choose Evolv Express to help them meet some of their most demanding security requirements because among other things: (a) Evolv Express is highly effective at detecting firearms and other mass casualty weapons; (b) it has a high throughput rate; (c) its settings can be adjusted and optimized to meet a customer’s unique security screening requirements; and (d) the use of the Evolv Express solution can help reduce labor costs.

When Evolv Express alerts on a weapon, the system still requires human security operators to remove the potential threat from the environment. This is why Evolv works with customers to improve their overall security processes and shares best practices across our community. Evolv Express is a modern component of layered security to help reduce the risk of something bad happening.

Evolv has repeatedly said that keeping the public safe and mitigating risk requires tradeoffs; for example, higher sensitivity settings may slow down the screening process. Evolv is upfront about the tradeoffs and customers regularly call out this as a key source of trust in Evolv and across the Evolv customer community.

Evolv Express systems are designed to configure various levels of a security profile, which are selected by the customer, based on their specific needs and events. These security profiles and configurations vary widely across venue and experience type and are at the discretion of the customer’s security team, who often change settings hourly to recognize different threats; for example, a school morning ingress versus an evening sporting event.

Claim #3:  Evolv misleads the public and customers to sell systems.

Fact:  Evolv’s customers rely on real-world performance metrics, testimonials and information obtained from other users in their respective industries, and often their own testing of Evolv Express, to guide their purchase decisions.

Evolv works with some of the country’s top brands and school districts, such as Mercedes-Benz Stadium (home to the Atlanta Falcons and MLS’s Atlanta United), SoFi Stadium (home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers) and YouTube Theater, Six Flags, TD Garden (home of the NHL’s Boston Bruins and NBA’s Boston Celtics), and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.

Customers typically purchase Evolv Express only after engaging in testing, trials and procurement processes that can last months or longer, including speaking with other Evolv customers about their real-world usage of Evolv Express before purchase. Certain customers, such as teams and venues within the NFL, MLB and NHL, comply with mandatory procurement standards (e.g., government entities) or obtain third-party approvals (e.g., league approval for professional sports teams) before making a purchase. Many of our customers have extensive security backgrounds both in the private and governmental sectors from around the world.

Claim #4:  Evolv regularly misses weapons.

Fact:  Evolv detected 400,000 weapons in 2023, including firearms and knives.

Customers frequently report that the Evolv Express systems have stopped weapons from entering their environments.  That being said, nothing is perfect all the time. Evolv customers are keenly aware of the fact that safety is never absolute. Rather, Evolv customers balance safety needs with venue requirements (e.g., avoiding crowds or long lines at security checkpoints) which is not an either/or choice but a strategy that relies on a combination of people, processes and technology.

There have been circumstances where a firearm was found inside a customer’s venue but with no evidence that the weapon had passed through the Evolv Express system. However, certain media entities have perpetuated misinformation by implying otherwise.

Examples:

  • At a theme park, the police made an arrest and were investigating fence jumping, or items thrown over the fence, as possibilities of how a firearm entered the park. It was not reported or confirmed that a gun went through the Evolv Express system.
  • Similarly, in North Mecklenburg High School, school officials made public statements asserting that the student carrying a weapon did not go through an Evolv system.

Yet select news services are choosing to ignore these statements and instead mislead by stating “Evolv missed the gun” to fit their desired false narrative.

Claim #5:  Evolv can’t catch knives.

Fact:  Evolv Express was specifically designed to detect guns but will also alert on many types of knives and some explosives.

Evolv Express was purposefully designed to detect firearms and mass casualty weapons. That’s why customers come to Evolv as part of their layered security strategy. In fact, in many instances, such as in schools, knives are already present inside the venue for various reasons. Even so, according to customer reported data, Evolv Express systems detected over 80,000 knives in 2022 and over 200,000 knives in 2023.

Example:  Windsor Regional Hospital has reported over 1,100 items intercepted since the installation of the Express system, including detecting hundreds of knives.

Claim #6:  Evolv can’t back up its through-put claims.

Fact:  Throughput rates for Evolv Express have been repeatedly observed in data collected during real-world operations.

  • Customer Example 1, NFL Game, 2023 – a dual wide lane Express unit screened approximately 5,152 people in one hour, including the screening of 2,713 people in a twenty-minute period, with an alert rate of just 5%
  • Customer Example 2, MLB Game, 2023 – a dual wide lane Express unit screened approximately 5,746 people in one hour, including the screening of 2,291 people in a ten-minute period, with an alert rate of just 4%
  • Customer Example 3, NFL Game, 2023 – a dual wide lane Express unit screened approximately 5,461 people in one hour, including the screening of 1,407 people in a ten-minute period, with an alert rate of just 5%

In fact, Evolv systems are designed specifically to allow for venues to efficiently screen high volumes of people without impacting visitor experience. This is due to the localized threat detection (i.e., the red box that pinpoints an area of concern) which not only reduces the burden on security teams to identify threats but also reduces the soft target of long lines or crowds around checkpoints, as well as reducing the potential for human error and bias.

Claim #7:  Evolv paid for third-party testing and tried to manipulate the results.

Fact:  Evolv elected to participate in the NCS⁴ operational exercise, sponsored by the University of Southern Mississippi, to offer another data point for those considering the technology.  All companies must pay to participate in the exercise, which reviews security vendors in sports and entertainment venues.

By design, the NCS⁴ operational exercise program allows experts to observe technology capabilities in a sports environment. School customers test and/or review our systems in school environments.

The NCS⁴ operational exercise program has an associated fee for all manufacturers completing the process.

Contrary to misleading claims, Evolv did not change results of the third-party NCS⁴ report, and all customers and serious prospective customers are offered full access to the complete NCS⁴ testing report upon request.  In addition to providing access to the report, Evolv will also walk prospective customers through the complete NCS4 report (as well as other third-party testing reports) during a 90-minute briefing.

Claim #8:  Evolv shouldn’t use the terms “weapons detector” or “frictionless” because it is misleading.

FACT:  Customers invest in Evolv after carefully assessing the technology during procurement, including reviewing literature, receiving a demo or pilot, visiting and speaking with other customers, and all customers have an opportunity to conduct testing in their actual environment.

Evolv’s sophisticated business-to-business customers, many of whom are themselves security experts and/or engage third-party experts, purchase Evolv Express with the specific goal of helping to detect and deter threats like firearms that could cause a mass-casualty event. Evolv’s technology is deployed at over 650 customers across many markets including education, healthcare, professional sports, industrial workplaces, houses of worship and tourist attractions.

Open Letter to Security Professionals

We have served this country in national security, law enforcement and military organizations. Each of us has decades of experience keeping our Homeland safe, here and abroad. Our experience spans the use of technology, intelligence, people, and assets to keep our country safe.

We have a combined 150 years’ experience, having served in leadership positions in the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Defense, New York Police Department, Office of National Intelligence, Transportation Security Administration, and United States Secret Service.

Today, we serve as advisors to Evolv Technology. We have known this company for years; many of us have worked with Evolv for nearly a decade. Our work has included reviewing the current business and products of Evolv, discussions with customers on their use of the technology, and discussing new product concepts. We know the company well, we know the people who run it, and regularly meet with Evolv and their customers.

We believe that Evolv and its management are dedicated to their mission to Make the World a Safer Place. They are committed to understanding the best use of their products, making improvements to the technology over time, and finding ways they can help their customers achieve their security objectives.

We have seen a wide variety of security technologies over our careers. The Evolv Express system provides an innovative approach to screening people, differentiating weapons from personal items as people walk through without always having to stop. We have seen the Evolv Express’ capabilities improve over time through both technological improvements and a deeper understanding of operational environments. Evolv combines the knowledge of security experts, experience operating thousands of systems screening millions of people, best in class engineers, committed workforce, continuous understanding of customers’ needs, and awareness of current threats to improve the technology and provide guidance on how it can best be used. The company cares deeply about ensuring customers and security professionals fully understand the system and they operate with high integrity in discussions about their technology and its capabilities.

Finally, we strongly believe that a security plan should include multiple layers to address different threat vectors and provide redundancy. These layers include people, process and technology working together. There is no single layer of security that will provide 100% security, that is why there are multiple layers which have proven to be the most successful in mitigating the highest degree of risk. Evolv’s solutions can be an important security technology to help detect and prevent threats from entering prohibited areas.

Wyoming Valley West School District Ensures Students Aren’t Late to Class with the Help of Evolv

For a number of years, Wyoming Valley West used walkthrough metal detectors sporadically at the entrances to all of its schools—four elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. About midway through 2022, a large grant from the Pennsylvania Crime Commission became available to every school district in the state. “The grant had a series of checkboxes for tiers one through three
that reflected the maturity of security deployments at the district,” Anthony Dicton, Safety and Security Coordinator at Wyoming
Valley School District recalls. “I was able to persuade the grant writers that we had completed tier one and most of tier two, and thus we qualified to purchase security screening systems. I was familiar with the Evolv Express technology and knew what we wanted.”

He later continues, “When we evaluated different options, we kept coming back to the fact that Evolv is used at some of the largest sports stadiums and most prestigious performing arts centers in the country. If it keeps their environments safe and scales to handle the volumes of guests they experience, then it is good enough for us.” By enabling the Evolv Express®, Wyoming Valley School District was able to achieve the following and more:

  • Screened over 1,000 people in approximately 30 minutes for graduation ceremony
  • Reduced nearly 50% nuisance alarm rate connected to metal detectors
  • Reclaimed entrance footprint taken up by security systems by going from 6 metal detectors to 4 Express systems

Florence 1 Schools Puts the Focus Back on Student Learning with Evolv Express Security Screening

The safety of students, faculty, and staff is a key consideration for Florence 1. “Safety is our number one priority from the start each day until we get our students home safely at night,” says Kyle Jones, Deputy Superintendent at Florence 1 Schools. “We want our faculty and students to focus on quality teaching and learning.”

But with the metal detectors came many encumbrances. Long lines formed outside of school entrances. “We were screening students one by one, which created congestion, especially in our car and bus line area,” recalls Jones. “With the metal detectors, students lined up as if they were preparing for assembly,” adds Thomas Burton, Campus Monitor and Security at Wilson High School. “We could only screen one student at a time.” Then Evolv was brought in. Through the implementation of the Express, Florence 1 Schools were able to achieve the following:

  • Removed over 100 walkthrough metal detectors and replaced them with 23 Evolv Express system
  • Cut the number of teachers and staff needed to manage security screening by over 85%
  • Streamlined secondary security checks with contextual threat detections

Florence 1 Schools Expands Partnership With Evolv Technology, Doubles Down OnCommitment to School Safety

The School District Was the Second Academic Institution in the U.S. to Adopt the AI-Powered Weapons Detection

WALTHAM, Mass. – (August 16, 2023) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leader in AI-based weapons detection security screening, has expanded its partnership with South Carolina’s Florence 1 Schools. In 2019, the largest school district in Florence County, Florence 1, became the second school district in the country to implement Evolv’s technology. It has since expanded its use to 23 Evolv Express® systems across eight schools.

Evolv Express® uses powerful sensor technology with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide safer, more accurate threat detection at superior volume and speed. Florence 1 Schools screen thousands of students, staff, and visitors Monday through Friday across its high school and middle schools.

“Florence 1 Schools is dedicated to the safety of our students and staff,” said Kyle Jones, deputy superintendent of Florence 1 Schools. “We have Evolv at our entry points, helping to detect items that might cause harm before they enter the building. That extra layer of security provides a sense of comfort to our parents, faculty, and the greater community, and demonstrates our recognition that violence in schools is increasing and we’ve taken a concrete step to address it.”

Students, staff, and visitors can walk right through the Evolv Express units every morning without always having to be individually screened. The system can differentiate between threats and everyday metal items carried in pockets and personal bags, such as keys and phones.

In addition to enhancing school safety, Evolv Express takes up significantly less space than the metal detectors Florence 1 previously used. The single dual-lane Evolv system in place at each entry point replaces four metal detectors. Systems are set up at the main entrances, bus and gym entries to the high school and middle schools. The old metal detectors required individuals to pass through slowly and in single file, causing long lines and delayed entry that cut into time in the classroom. Evolv Express helps keep schools safer while helping with expedited entry and added learning time.

“As an early adopter, Florence 1’s belief in Evolv as an effective measure to improve school safety helped us forge partnerships with hundreds of school districts and counting all over the country,” said Neil Sandhoff, Evolv’s vice president of education. “We are immensely proud of our continued work with Florence 1, which helped pave the way for like-minded communities working to create safer environments for children and teachers so that they can all focus on learning.”

More than 600 U.S. schools have partnered with Evolv. Atlanta Public Schools, Nebraska’s Winnebago Public Schools, and New Mexico’s Clovis Municipal Schools, among others, have all put in place Evolv systems to create a more efficient and effective screening process as part of a layered approach to school safety. Evolv solutions are used to screen about 250,000 students every day across the U.S.

Albuquerque, New Mexico-Area Rio Rancho Public Schools Demonstrates Commitment to Safety With Evolv Technology Implementation

Confident In an Efficient Initial Rollout, RRPS has already invested in more than 20 units to be Dispersed Across the District

WALTHAM, Mass. – (August 9, 2023) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV) has partnered with Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS) in New Mexico to bring an added layer of security to the district beginning this school year. Students, faculty and visitors at V. Sue Cleveland High School started experiencing Evolv Express®, an AI-based weapons detection security screening system, when the academic year commenced on August 3. The district plans to add 20-plus Express systems to its schools over the next few years.

According to school officials, safety is RRPS’ top priority, but the district understands that it can’t come at the sake of efficiency. Evolv Express® system’s ability to differentiate commonly carried metal items like cell phones and keys from potential weapons while helping people to pass through at their normal pace was appealing, as was the positive response from other schools’ using Express.

“We thoroughly vetted this technology, going as far as traveling to schools that are comparable in size and design that already have Express in place so we could see the system in use,” said Sal Maniaci, Rio Rancho Public School’s executive director of safety and security. “We’re impressed with the tech’s capabilities and are pleased that it will be an important – yet non-intrusive – part of the safety measures we have in place.”

Evolv is in more than 465 school buildings across 34 states, including 11 of the country’s largest school districts. Express screens hundreds of thousands of students daily.

“We’ve continued to see interest from schools in recent months,” said Neil Sandhoff, Evolv’s vice president of education. “As gun violence – and fear surrounding it – remains a concern for our nation, many educators across the country have found Evolv’s partnership to be a trusted tool that doesn’t distract from learning.”

Evolv-commissioned Gun Violence in America: A Survey on Americans’ Anxiety revealed that three out of four parents have a child(ren) that have anxiety about school shootings, and 54 percent report that their child(ren)’s anxiety has increased in the past three years. The survey also found that three out of four Americans feel safer at places that screen for and do not allow weapons inside.

Hemet Unified School District Becomes a Trailblazer for School Security in California with Evolv

When Dr. Christi Barrett was selected as Superintendent of HUSD in 2016, one of the first things she did was to form an official Security Department. “This was just one of a number of security initiatives we have launched,” she explains. “The culture at Hemet is one where students are always at the center,” Barrett says.“We wanted to be proactive in how we screen anyone entering our schools,” she conveys. “But we had a lot of challenges with the metal detectors. The rate and pace at which students could come into the building weren’t manageable due to the volume and compressed timeline of students, staff, and visitors entering our schools each morning.” That’s where Evolv came in. Through the implementation of the Express®, Hemet Unified School District was able to achieve the following:

  • Helped create a safer environment for students, teachers, administrators, and staff
  • Reduced lengthy security lines due to inefficiencies of walkthrough metal detectors
  • Avoided security screening delays that resulted in students being tardy for first-period classes

Nash County Public Schools Introduces a New Layer in Safety with Evolv Express

Eight School Districts In North Carolina Now Partnering with Evolv for AI Weapons Detection

WALTHAM, Mass. – (August 1, 2023) – Evolv Technology (NASDAQ: EVLV), the leader in AI-based weapons detection security screening, today announced its partnership with North Carolina’s Nash County Public Schools (NCPS). Starting today, NCPS is installing Evolv’s state-of-the-art Express® weapons detection systems at all high and middle schools to strengthen its security measures as students head back to class.

Amidst increasing concerns over school safety and recent incidents of violence disrupting classrooms across the country, the school district aims to ease the minds of teachers, students, and parents through this new technology which helps for weapons screening without always making people stop to be wanded, searched, or empty their pockets and bags.

Unlike traditional metal detectors, Evolv Express uses powerful sensor technology with artificial intelligence (AI) to provide safer, more accurate threat detection at unprecedented volume and speed. NCPS joins over 450 schools around the country using Express to add a layer of safety for students, teachers, and visitors so the focus can remain on learning.

“Helping school districts balance a need for enhanced safety with student engagement is one of the most important aspects of our partnership,” said Neil Sandoff, VP of education for Evolv Technology.  “A connected community – one where students and staff feel safe and seen – can yield positive results, not only from a security standpoint, but academically and emotionally.”

The respectful nature of Evolv’s screening technology enables students to walk through the open-air kiosk, often retaining their concealed belongings reducing delays or lines. In the event of an alert, the system’s green lights may turn red and pinpoint the potentially dangerous item, accompanied by a photo of the student with a red box around the alarmed object displayed on a tablet. NCPS trained staff members can then conduct a targeted search based on the alert.

“Our commitment to fostering a safe and nurturing learning environment empowers us to embrace cutting-edge technology while preserving the seamless flow of everyday school life,” said Heather Louise Finch, NCPS spokeswoman.

The Evolv system, already deployed in Johnston County Public Schools, Guildford County Schools, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as well as major sporting venues, stadiums and theme parks, offers effective detection and deterrent while maintaining a non-prison-like atmosphere for students, distinguishing it from conventional security measures.
